About the Alfred Olango murder in El Cajon. Let's back it up a little, okay.

The cops were called because his family feared for HIS safety. He was running in traffic. He was mentally challenged. When they called for help they explained he was mentally challenged, acting erratically, and that they wanted HELP.

That alone should have been all the cops needed to know before they show up, all adrenalized and ready for trouble. No attempt to deescalate. Just confront a mentally challenged black guy. I mean, what the fuck. He's just a black guy, right? So they approach. He pulls a vape thing out of his pocket and assumes a "shooter stance" (whatever the fuck that is . . . . I'm sure a DU resident expert will inform me). One cop uses a taser (appropriate under the circumstances). The other cop squeezes off at least five rounds.

Voila! Another dead black guy. Dead at the hands of a cop. How common.

And don't tell me about the cop/shooter being black, too. Freddie Gray's killers were black. Lots of black cops kill black people. The issue is police tactics and (lack of) proper police training. And maybe more than a touch of racism. No reason to think a black cop is immune to treating black "suspects" differently than white "suspects."

Where was the mental health unit in this case? Where was a watch commander when the call says the guy was mentally unstable? Why wasn't some different protocol in place? Why didn't someone realize that cops with guns pointing at a mentally challenged person might make him do bizarre things? Why was this a situation that had to be resolved instantly? Why not assess, consider, strategize, wait it out, deescalate, hell, maybe throw a net over the guy.

Why did he have to be shot? And not just shot, but SHOT. Multiple rounds. Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!

Meh. Just another dead black guy. How dare he reach for that vape. And stand in some strange way.

I know. I can hear it now. Shooter stance. Object in hand. The end of a vape looks like a gun barrel. Hands in his pockets. Hands together. Like a shooter.

Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang

Maybe call EMS and the cops? Rex Sep 2016 #1
Maybe, but a citizen is supposed to be able to call 911 and get the appropriate help. Stinky The Clown Sep 2016 #2
Then maybe someone needs to talk to 911. Rex Sep 2016 #3
That could absolutely be a part of the problem. Stinky The Clown Sep 2016 #4
how do we know this "he assumed a shooter position"? Not from cops I would hope? Schema Thing Sep 2016 #5
That's the story being told Stinky The Clown Sep 2016 #6
