(153,141 posts)could you ALWAYS do the splits or did you have to work at it?
Control-Z
(15,682 posts)I had to work for a perfect split on the other, though. That was when I was younger. I ended up needing a hip replacement - just a few months ago, in fact. The doctor said the splits didn't cause it, just hastened it by some 20 years.

(153,141 posts)I know someone who is fretting about upcoming surgery
Control-Z
(15,682 posts)out if the house. But that is mostly psychological, I think. I started falling before the surgery and had a hard time after with balance and learning to walk unassisted. My leg felt 6 inches longer on the replacement side.
It was really worth it, though. I would be bedridden otherwise. I'm still in the healing phase but unless I'm doing something strenuous I'm back to completely normal.
The surgery was not a cake walk like I expected but I don't know that you should tell your friend that. I'm glad I didn't know, to be honest.

(153,141 posts)take it slowly - you will get there and then you can kick some cane ass

(1,369 posts)Was using a walker before the operation. The first 3 days after the operation were kinda rough, but every thing is great now. Tell your friend to do it, get it over with and return to a normal life.

(5,231 posts)The 'middle' splits I had to train to do, and I absolutely hated them. Only did them for one routine out of six years competing (balance beam).
I am SO inflexible - I do fitness DVDs at home and am always astounded when they stretch at the end, how flexible they are compared to me
susanna
(5,231 posts)if I tried to do them now I would hurt myself and likely end up in traction.
Ah...the good old days.

(5,754 posts)but stopped stretching. I'm getting back though, could be a goal for my 71st birthday. My goal for my 70th was to swim a mile, and I did that. Yep, I'm FAT, and OLD.

(3,855 posts)This is a man with a great sense of humor. He's a very regular, normal, down-to-earth person. This dude is comfortable in his own skin and not above clowning around a bit to make those around him more comfortable, too.

I'm gonna miss him, but it's nice to see him loosening his tie and stuff. He's done a great job.

(64,988 posts)Probably until my late 20's. When in high school, it was something i could do dancing at a party (a James Brown/Jackie Wilson type thing) that nobody else could do. When you're the short basketball playing, straight A kid, you gotta have something to look like you belong at the party.
Today, i could get more than 50% of the way. My wife, however, could still probably do that until she was 50 and could still probably get 75% of the way to a full split. She's still incredibly flexible in nearly all parts of the musculoskeletal system for early 60's.

(70,483 posts)Damn! Obama has been the best President in my lifetime ..... Michelle is a class act
and so is Joe B. too. And don't forget what Jill Biden has done in teaching and
her work for vets.
He is so real and enjoys making fun of himself too.
