My favorites are that nothing edges up or increases or decreases or abates, but skyrockets and plummets. If it does not sound dramatic, they think everyone will turn their shows off. But as you say it gets to a point where they've cried wolf too much.

They use that breaking news device
because they know it commands our
attention. And then they abuse it
to drive up ratings. Eventually we
become immune to it and it just
fades into the media noise. Then
they find a fresh new gimmick to
get our attention. Lather rinse repeat.

14. I think it started with 9/11
Tue Oct 4, 2016, 08:51 AM
Oct 2016

People were tuned in to cable news every day, pretty much all day. There really was a lot of "Breaking News" for quite some time. Viewers became conditioned to react to the "Breaking News" tag, so networks started using it for what was previously called just "News".

I can't imagine how they will get our attention if there ever is a real earth shattering story, as we've all become desensitized to their fake banners.

sensational stories and the ratings that went with them. In the process, they forgot how to report on regular stories, so they had to get creative.

I cited 9/11 as that was when I became a news junkie and I know that is true of a lot of people that I know. Unfortunately, some tuned into Fox and never turned it off.

I agree completely with you and want to add my thought that always popped into my mind when I was still getting fooled by that breaking news banner. It was "How stupid do they think I am?"

Websites also abuse the breaking news banner putting it up whenever they post a new story.

My heart would skip too, when they'd break into programming. I always thought it was going to be the end of the world. Another bad childhood memory in NJ is seeing the vapor trails of high flying jets coming from the east and wondering if they were nuclear missiles from the USSR. How can you blame me? The nuns had me believing the world was going to end soon.

When I watch the teevee, I also watch the science channels. Discovery channel used to be interesting but I'm not much into scripted naked shows. Hey, that's just me.

seriously, the "breaking news" in the middle of the day was that someone was going to have a press conference that evening.

maybe "breaking news" is the right term, because our news media is broken, that's for sure.

Once upon a time, snow in Michigan was something mentioned during the weather forecast - "drive safely, try to stay off the roads". Nowadays, anything more than 2 or 3 inches triggers a "Snowmageddon" with wall-to-wall coverage of doom.

I've also noticed that the 'News' has replaced a lot of other programming.
It starts at 2 am here, on for 8 hrs, a game show or two and then more 'news'.

Nothing important to say, at least if there is they're not saying it.

Blank stares, mispronunciations and the personal banter doesn't belong on a real News show. IMO.

Is there really a journalist working somewhere?
I heard that MO University is cutting into its' journalism program.
I guess it doesn't rate like the old days.

Yeah, I'm an old grouch, so what?
