Well, the house is all shuttered up as as secure as it can get.
There's a mandatory evacuation for all barrier islands including Palm Beach. Wonder if blowhard Rush will broadcast today as that creep and home/studio are right on the ocean. There is the parent radio station WJNO across the lagoon but it's right on the water too. Why am I writing about this idiot? I wish him the worst.
Shipped the girls off to Colorado yesterday so they will be fine.
I'll ride it out in Wellington which is west of West Palm Beach about 11 miles and will report here on conditions as they develop. Equestrian community with lots of polo and folks are worried about their horses who never do storms well.
Good luck to all my Fellow Floridians and be safe.
Maybe it won't be that bad but a slight jag from the predicted path could put us right in cat 4 conditions by 11 tonite.
Ya just never know...

(7,619 posts)I've been through a lot of these hurricanes through the years. One year we had like three storms that demolished a pretty well-built house I had. It got rebuilt of course but after that insurance rates went through the roof and deductibles sky high.
If one lives on a barrier island now they have to be able to self-fund a rebuild more or less.

(714 posts)Prayers and positive energy to all of you in Fla. We live on a barrier island off of Wilmington NC. Yesterday they were calling for a direct hit to us and today no one knows. We have been through this many times over the last 40 years but this time, our Crazy governor took 500 thousand out of our hurricane fund to fight the courts to keep his bathroom bill from being shot down. McCrory is also a threat to NC!

(7,619 posts)Hopefully for you and yours it will weaken and perhaps stay well off shore.
Did I attend an "Azzalea Festival" there at one time? It was in the spring and I didn't see an azzalea the whole time I was there. It was like a three day drunk fest attended by Hell's Angels and a lot of people wanting to party.
Crashed in Surf City where we set up a tent on a friends property and it was a re-union of a lot of old Army buddies for me.

(72,300 posts)Someone very special to me lives in Fort Lauderdale. He has stayed home through hurricanes for over twenty years and I worry about him every time there is a blow.
Looks like his little red car there.

(7,619 posts)From West Palm northward is where the brunt of the storm will hit. Ft. Pierce up to Merrit Island and the Cape will be a mess before this is over no matter where that freakin' thing goes.
So, if one has any watercraft there's a lot of work that should have been done already. Saw a guy earlier moving his boat away from the docks (good idea) but then he had to swim for it to shore in the chop, lol. Main problem there is storm surge and flooding in coastal areas. Even the the Inland Waterway and lagoons between any barrier Island and the coast proper will be affected as well.
Ft Lauderdale has a troop of monkeys running around not far from where that pic you posted was taken. Technically, I think they are apes - Rhesus macaques.
Lot of strange, exotic animal and plant invaders down here.

(7,619 posts)Right now it's drizzling a bit and the wind is starting to pick up some. Earlier it was just dead still and the sky was an eerie greenish gray color but I expect things will start to deteriorate rapidly here in Wellington after 3 pm this afternoon. I'm ready!!
The animals are all safe and sound inside.
I've got one of my daughter's Pom and a kitty visiting while she headed west to Colorado with the rest of the girls. I'm keeping one cat in the garage and her's is hiding under a bed 'cause he is a feral rescue and really doesn't take change well. It was just loads of fun stuffing him into that little carrier for the trip over here and I've got the scars to remind me. He likes me too, but...
He'll come out from under to the edge of the bed frame for a treat and head scratch but has not emerged to eat or drink which has me a bit concerned. Can't put his food and water under the bed or the other Poms will finish it off for him. I'll figure something to keep them outta that bedroom for awhile I guess so he can eat.
Once the storm really hits tonite, all the animals will be terrified. The noises, if one has never heard the wind at that level before, are loud and very frightening.
Oh,oh look! Governor Rick "Batboy" Scott just came on and announced that Mathew was now a Cat IV hurricane. He also urged all homeless people to avoid the shelters and just ride it out in the open since there's no Medicare available in Florida for them anyway.
Just kidding... but I did hear him mention that the sooner it was over for everybody's sake - the better.
I sure hope failed Presidential candidate Sen. Rubio can be defeated before he get can get his lazy ass back into the Senate and help his buddies block any possible progressive bills from being passed. Looks like Hills is going to win here and take Florida's not insignificant total of electoral votes if things continue here (and nation wide) the way they have been. Still gotta GOTV though!!! I sent Hillary $$ and signed on to volunteer, but haven't really heard much back from them until yesterday so after this mess is over I'll go phone bank somewhere in West Palm.
I started this thread because I hadn't seen another one on this storm at that time. I'd be curious to hear from other DU'ers north of me along the coast 'cause while I should be fine, they will be the ones with the most damage. We will all lose power, no doubt, so we'll have to play strip poker for entertainment later, I guess.
anyway, thanks again to all for your kind words!

Really doesn't look like it will be much where I am west of town. Can't wait to see how the island look tomorrow.

(7,619 posts)Yeah, poor Haiti can't seem to catch a break. I remember one of those religious nutjobs, Pat Robertson I believe, saying the earthquake occured because them voodoo people had made a deal with Satan or some such crap.God was punishing them...pffft.

(2,872 posts)I'd put even money that Robertson, David J. Stewart, and Ken Ham have already said something about "something something wicked city of sodomites and sinners, new age Sodom and Gomorrah, they deserved to be smote" and bullshit like that.

(42,743 posts)I'm north of you in Lakeland. It's raining off and on with no wind
to speak of at this time. But a lot can change before morning.
Best of luck to you and all others in Matthew's path.

(7,619 posts)Daytona is being hit right now but the eye wall is offshore a ways and de-forming.
Merritt Island caught it the worst just like I knew it would, with people who foolishly stayed there were tweeting in terror. One tweet said the roof just flew off their house and they now wish they'd left.
Headed for Jax now and it's wall-to-wall coverage on CNN, MSMBC and all local channels.
Hope you and yours are all safe and just experiencing rain out of this mess.

(42,743 posts)Although we are still getting some wind gusts. I actually saw some sunlight burst through
the clouds just a short while ago. You're right. Jax will be catching hell for a while.
