Roberto Unger - I'm suspicious. There must be some way Brazil benefits from Republican Presidency.

Roberto Unger has made a front and center VIDEO stating that Obama should be defeated in 2012. Unger, a former professor of Obama's, who says he supported Obama in 2008.

I read up a little on Unger. Although he says he supported Obama in 2008, I found no video or articles by him supporting Obama for the 2008 election. Maybe there's something there, but nothing like this video THIS time.

Unger is an activist. But he's an activist in politics in BRAZIL. Not here. He's an academic and activist. I saw nothing in his bio suggesting he's done anything in this country to make the country better or work for the working class or poor. He's a professor who has been active, and an activist, in Brazilian politics. He even ran for PRESIDENT in Brazil once.

Soooo....I asked myself...my ol' cynical self....I wonder if Brazil stands to GAIN something if there's a Republican in the White House in America? Just wondering.

So I went Googling. Bingo.

"In an October 2011 article in POLITICO, an aide to Romney said that 'neither the [George W.] Bush administration or the Obama administration really focused on Latin America'—and added that Romney envisions "larger campaigns for economic opportunity in Latin America." The Latin America issues page on Romney's website says that he, in the first 100 days of his presidency, will launch a "public diplomacy and trade promotion effort" called the Campaign for Economic Opportunity in the region." (NOTE THAT THE ACRONYM FOR ROMNEY'S GROUP IS CEO)
(snip)
"Governor Romney announced a cadre of foreign policy advisors acting as a "shadow cabinet" last October. His Latin America team has two co-chairs: Ray Walser, senior policy analyst at the Heritage Foundation; and Clifford Sobel, U.S. ambassador to BRAZIL from 2006 to 2009."

I would say that a Harvard professor, who had run but lost the Presidency in Brazil, might have a better chance of winning that office in the future, if he could return to Brazil and claim in his campaign that he helped bring more trade and aid to Brazil by helping elect Mitt Romney. Or maybe he just would be happy just to see more jobs go to Brazil, and more products exported from Brazil to the U.S., since Unger's heart is clearly in that country.

Not saying that's the only reason Unger made his video (which is an odd thing for a former professor to do, don't you think?), but it sure is interesting and very coincidental.

Roberto Unger is a leftist activist who worked against Brazil's military dictatorship and an esteemed social theorist. I'm pretty sure he means what he says.

6. Being a "leftist activist" doesn't mean he doesn't see an advantage for Brazil if Romney is elected.

He's too smart to think that there's no difference between Obama and Romney. He just doesn't care what damage Romney would do the U.S., as long as Brazil benefits.

hostility toward President Obama's re-election bid, and it appears, under a Romney presidency, he might be able to get more for Brazil even if it will destroy the United States . . . it seems. Because a Romney presidency will do just that.

9. I was completely correct. He was an activist in Brazil, and ran for President in Brazil.

He would like to see more economic opportunity in Brazil, no doubt. It makes no difference what party he belonged to in Brazil. I made no reference to that in my OP, and it doesn't matter. That is a different country...our November election is for the U.S., not Brazil.

He has not been an activist HERE in the U.S., working to make things better for the working class or poor here.

Yes, he has worked against the then current leadership in Brazil, esp when he ran for President there.

All true. All correct. All as I said in my OP.

He doesn't seem to care what things are like HERE....only what things are like in BRAZIL. Where his heart is. Whoever will help Brazil the most, is who he will give support to. And he has. That person is Romney.

that Unger supposes that, Obama having "failed to advance the progressive cause", as he has it, the only alternative is to let the Republicans fuck things up badly enough that an actual leftist gets elected. This would be consistent with Unger's political thought being influenced by Marx and Hegel, and the Leninist "heightening of the contradictions" between labour and capital needed as part of the dialectic process that brings about revolution.
