This morning I had my third encounter with a Trump supporter here in Oklahoma who found my Hillary bumper sticker disgusting to regular people. We were coming out of the vets office with our dogs when a man with a trump hat began yelling at us in the parking lot. Called us ignorant liberals who were ruining his country. Told us to move to Canada or better yet go to jail with "Killary"... Scared the crap out of us.
I went home, took my Hillary sign out of the yard, and took the bumper sticker off the car. This man's anger was beyond normal. His face was red, he was shaking his fists at us, it was terrifying. I was waiting for him to go to his truck and pull out a gun, he had a gun rack in his truck.
I am usually strong enough to handle this type of thing, but he really scared me. I came close to calling 911.
What will it be like if Trump loses? Will they all go to the militias and arm up? Damn Trump and his Breitbart leader!

(9,895 posts)The alt-right fever swamp of fools, bigots, racists, conspiracy theorists and down right morons are not ready for anything like the Navy SEALS, the Green Berets, the Army Rangers, Delta Force operators or even the FBI and ATF if they were inclined to actually fire on them.
If they ever actually started shooting, it would be a first round knockout by the US military and I guarantee they may be angry when they think they have the upper hand, but when it comes down to it, they are cowards and blowhards who lack the conviction of their heated rhetoric...not that any of the barbarians yelling at people know what "rhetoric" is in the first place.

(12,148 posts)This may be one of the weaknesses of an all professional military.
sarisataka
(18,220 posts)Wouldn't be too keen on firing on American citizens?
That is the strength of an all professional military. They tend to stay out of the political process and leave law enforcement to police.
TexasProgresive
(12,148 posts)With an all volunteer army there is an inevitable polarization of us v. them. Draftees are more civilian than military.
sarisataka
(18,220 posts)You have a force trained to follow orders, within established rules and regulations. In the US that includes posse comitas.
Conscript militaries tend to have lower levels of training. They rely more on their officers to tell the what is legal. A charismatic leader can more easily convince his troops that a political change is necessary.
TexasProgresive
(12,148 posts)What I know of our present forces is a strong leaning to the right that was not so strong when we had the draft.

(37,132 posts)7. Here's what 1860s conservatives thought of Lincoln...
Below is a conservative political cartoon from 1860, after Lincoln won the Republican nomination for president, by cartoonist Louis Maurer, engraved by Currier and Ives.
See if you recognize anything:
http://www.loc.gov/pictures/item/2003674590/
also http://elections.harpweek.com/1860/cartoon-1860-large.asp?UniqueID=5&Year=1860
"The Republican Party Going to the Right House"
Lincoln rides in on a (fence) rail, carried by Horace Greely (anti-slavery editor of the New York Tribune), leading his followers into a lunatic asylum.
GREELY: "Hold on to me Abe, and we'll go in here by the unanimous consent of the people."
LINCOLN: "Now my friends I'm almost in, and the millennium is going to begin, so ask what you will and it shall be granted."
Younger Woman: "Oh! what a beautiful man he is, I feel a passionate attraction' every time I see his lovely face."
Bearded Man: "I represent the free love element, and expect to have free license to carry out its principles."
Man with trim beard and hat: "I want religion abolished and the book of Mormon made the standard of morality."
Caricatured black man: "De white man hab no rights dat cullud pussons am bound to spect' I want dat understood."
Older woman: "I want womans rights enforced, and man reduced in subjection to her authority."
Scruffy man with bottle: "I want everybody to have a share of everybody elses property."
Barefoot man: "I want a hotel established by government, where people that aint inclined to work, can board free of expense, and be found in rum and tobacco."
Seedy top-hat man: " I want guaranteed to every Citizen the right to examine every other citizen's pockets without interruption by Policemen."
Man at the end: "I want all the stations houses burned up, and the M.P.s killed, so that the bohoys can run with the machine and have a muss when they please."
Lets go down the list, shall we?:
Supported by "liberal media": Check
Liberals will embark on profligate giveaways to THOSE PEOPLE? Check.
Flighty, emotional, entranced by charisma/celebrity? Check.
People conservatives consider sexual deviants? Check.
People conservatives consider religious deviants? Check (and how ironic, this particular turn).
Grasping minorities after special rights? Check.
"Feminazis"? Check.
There's a vast army of layabouts, thugs, foreigners, and outright thieves who want to take your hard-earned stuff? Check, check, check, and check.
Based on what the conservatives of the two eras say about their opposition, the heir to the name "Party of Lincoln" these days is plainly the Democratic Party.

(7,496 posts)It depends on if they witness the behavior, and whether the parking lot where it happened is their private property. At least he should be informed that they will not render services to him if he continues to harass other customers, and will notify authorities to remove him if it continues.
I just meant that they can't refuse services to him just for wearing a Trump hat.

(11,781 posts)I also suspect the majority of the Archie Bunker's will see the writing on the wall before the election. As it becomes more evident that their choice of candidate has put them in this position, they will lash out at their own party for not climbing into the burning dumpster with them. I foresee a whole lot of his supporters staying home and not voting down ticket. Then, history will repeat itself. There will be 2 months of "it was rigged", coupled with 9 months of "he wasn't a true/wasn't conservative enough". Finally, 18 months after the election, we'll hear the diehards calling him an idiot (much like Palin).

(1,965 posts)That there literally are no HRC yard signs or bumper stickers. I see a few, very few, drumpf signs and stickers, but mostly, the sign I see are for state and local level candidates. States attorney, county board and the like. Side note: Most of the cars I see with drumpf stickers also have NRA stickers, FWIW.
This is the first year, in ages , that I'm not displaying a sign. Neither are the other few "progressives" I'm acquainted with around here. My main reason, and the general consensus, is that there are just too many nuts roaming around. That displaying signs advocating the actual movement forward, of this country, just stir up the Neanderthals.

(1,363 posts)in Reno, 45th in line to register my new car. Went outside for some fresh air, and this huge Dodge pick up pulls into handicap parking, with tRump bumper stickers all over it and used two parking places. I was talking to an older gentleman who was asking people if they were registered to vote. The tRump supporter jumps out, a loud, vile, little man and aggressively yells at me and the kindly gentleman, "You better register to vote republican and vote for tRump, or you will pay for your life" I walked away, to tell someone that this buffoon was parked illegally in a handicapped spot. When I came back out, he was in the voter registration guy's face, screaming at him to tell him (the tRump supporter) who he was voting for. People were coming outside he was yelling so loud! I went over and told him to leave this gentleman alone, and because I have darker skin, he let loose on me. Telling me to 'Get out' of his country...blah, blah, blah...I calmly looked at him and said, "excuse me, but, I believe you are in MY country" He looked dumbfounded so I told him that I am Native American, he couldn't understand what I was saying....Security finally came out and told the tRump guy to move his vehicle or he was going to get fined. He jumped in his pick up and left....I am not sure why he was there to begin with? But people clapped when he left! lol!

sarisataka
(18,220 posts)what should happen.
I also do not support tracking people who "out" themselves. Tracking someone because they commit a "fault" is extremely vague and open to unintended consequences. If they break a law, prosecute them. If they don't then their is no need to record or track them.
Consider that to other people you are "them". How much tracking should you accept?
Bernardo de La Paz
(48,789 posts)... such as a conviction or a charge. Yes, my description is necessarily vague because I am not and will not be drafting legislation with specific provisions.
Tracking such as seeing if they are conspiring with others, perhaps extra scrutiny when flying, flagging background checks resulting from weapons purchases, etc.
Not ordinary people. People like the Bundy gang, people returning from conflict zones like Syria who are thought to have received ISIS training, etc. Does not necessarily require breaking a law to be a security risk.
Civil liberties are very important. I would err on the side of protecting civil liberties when there is doubt about a criterion. It is hard to draw sharp lines in the sand. There are some sharp lines that must be preserved, like Due Process, Admission of Evidence, no torture. But other, lesser, lines might have to be a bit blurry when people empowered to protect us have to make tough judgement calls.

(18,124 posts)I don't know what to expect anymore. Unarmed people shot down in the streets and in stores, men women, children. Racism 'normalized' and embraced by millions because some fascist goon said it's okay. "Locker room" talk is being laughed at behind millions of doors in america, and Nov. 8 this RW goon will still get votes. I personally can't wait, because his numbers will give me some idea just how widespread american racism is, STILL. Hell if I report them to the authorities, I expect I will be arrested first for LWB. America has shown it's ass for the last 7+ years, all because of an AA POTUS.
The new nazi party of america with a bonified fuhrer has risen precisely because an AA became POTUS. I will NEVER be fooled again into thinking that racism, hate with racism at it's base will ever disappear. When HRC wins, watch the uptick in domestic violence against women.Guaranteed. The RW wackos are out in the open and proud to be hateful, racist, mysogynistic, bigoted, homophobic and xenopphobic. And when HRC goes through the front door at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue,, they won't be disapppearing any time soon in fact I won't be surprised to see white hoods marching down that very same Avenue as they did 50,000 strong in the 20's. They already have their own jails and police for your information. Also it won't surprise me IF there is trouble of the 2nd amendment variety, as called for by the RWnominee-fuhrer at polling places.
And finally, I will try to walk past any racist, fascist disruptor.........otherwise............

Second, get good at memorizing license numbers. Call the behavior in to the cops, make a report, get the report number. Most of these assholes are all mouth, but it will be convenient for the cops to have a paper trail of those who aren't.
When Trump loses, all this anger will have nowhere to go. Some of it will turn inward into depression. Most of it will become drunk and loud at the local bars. A few of them will turn violent and the government will have its hands full.
