Gas Station at Nashville

Just read an article on Huffington post about a Shell gas station that has had horrible messages on it about Hillary and Obama. The gas station's address is 5106 Old Hickory Boulevard, Nashville, TN. The owner Bradford Lewis, of Lewis Country Store says he has freedom of speech. Shell international might not like thier brand associated with his speech. www.shell.us/about-us/contact-shell/service-station-feedback.html

1. Can you link the Huffpo article?

Rather than making us search. It's a DU tradition to provide a link.
Thanks.

6. That's a very racist area, I think.

I drove to New Orleans to see the 2015 Sugar Bowl (Ohio State vs. Alabama) and took I-65 through upper Tennessee on the way home.

I stopped at a place called "Sad Sam's" in Cross Plains, TN to buy gasoline. They also sold groceries and fireworks. What a combination! Anyway, I walked inside the store to look at their fireworks, and I saw these kinds of figurines:

(That's not my FB account, by the way. I don't have a FB account.)

Cross Plains is located in Robertson County, one county north of Davidson County (the location of the HuffPo article).

I brought a pair of these S&p shakers in the 80's. pretty common in the south. And I am African American.

8. Really?

Huh, that's interesting!

I'm pretty sure that many African Americans in my area (near Dayton, OH) would be very upset about such a thing. Like 99% sure.

I'm wary of writing this on DU, but here goes...
I've liked the more laid-back attitude of AA's that I've met in the South. I mean, on a personal level for me. It's not the end of the world, but there's some AA males around here who act like they've got a chip on their shoulder even when I try to be very nice. Oh, well.

9. I got them in New Orleans and my parents brought me a pair in Memphis

While I don't find the mammy and Uncle Tom offensive ( Gone with the wind) The black lawn jockeys looking like monkeys though are really offended me. There is a website I saw years ago that showed how blacks were depicted in the country in ceramic cookery. The woman who ran the site was African American.

10. I never understood the lawn jockey thing.

I saw them rarely up here when I was young, and I assumed the people who displayed them were trying to be offensive. It just struck me as pointless unless that was the motivation.

I haven't seen one for a very long time, though.

EDIT: The ones that I saw around here looked like men to me, by the way. I'd KNOW it was racist if they looked like monkeys.
