(43,145 posts)Context--a young boy is pulled from the rubble in the aftermath of the Haitian earthquake.
He was in the rubble for eight days. Eight days without food or water.
Yet he is pulled up out of a living hell, certain death, and the smile on his face is priceless. As if to embrace the second chance at life that he has been given.
If only we could all have that attitude every day we wake up in the morning.

(16,911 posts)why is it that we see almost no feel good stories in the media these days? No human interest stories that make us feel good about each other? IMHO it's because the corporate overlords want us divided and hating and resenting each other. These pics make it so much harder for them to achieve their goal.

(2,131 posts)I needed something positive today.
When I finally have money available, I want to do something like #18 for a young family.
In 1998, I was driving from Seattle to Oklahoma with my four sons (ages 11, 9, 6, and 3). We stopped at a pizza place along the freeway in Wyoming, and we ordered the lunch buffet. My boys were a little restless from being cooped up in the car, but they quickly settled down at our table. I took each of them to the buffet, one at a time starting with the youngest, and then we all sat down and ate. My oldest helped get seconds for the younger boys, so I could finish my meal, and they were all very good about keeping their voices down. I was very proud of them.
But what really made my day (and still makes me smile) is what happened as we were getting ready to leave. There were a lot of other people there, mostly older couples, and several people complimented my boys on how nicely they behaved. It was so awesome to see the pride, and surprise, on their faces when total strangers complimented them for being such great kids. Sure, they hear it from me all of the time, but it's different when it's coming from someone other than Mom.

(15,139 posts)notice, though, that the little girl's letter to and response from the supermarket happened in England - where civility hasn't entirely gone out the window. That letter, if sent to the local markets here in California would, no doubt, end up in the circular file. Nevertheless, it is encouraging to see that the golden rule is still operational worldwide.

(14,164 posts)I needed that.
So I thought I'd find another one to add:
Kandu is an unusual little dog. For one thing, he was born with no front legs. When they took him to be euthanized, the vet said the dog had too much heart and was just too full of life, so he turned him over to Evergreen Animal Protective League (EAPL)
I saw Kandu on the evening news and, along with about a hundred other people, called in to ask about adopting him. When I filled in the long application, I mentioned that our rescued Labrador, Bob, was involved in the Heeling Friends program at the local hospital. We thought Kandu would make a cool therapy dog. That idea must have been a plus for us because we were chosen
He does have a disability, but he certainly doesnt think of himself as disabled. After completing the certification process for Heeling Pets, we committed to two years at the Yampa Valley Medical Center.
I put his wheels on, and he cruises down the corridors, his roller-blade wheels flashing little lights. Staff members, visitors and patients all stop to say hello. This dog has got such great spirit that it seems to be infectious
In addition to seeing patients in their rooms, we often stop by the physical-therapy area. Recently we have been spending time there with 10-year-old Tyler, one of Kandus favorite people. Last summer, Tyler lost his feet and parts of some fingers from an illness. The first time we met, Tyler asked all about Kandu and held the little dog on his lap. Kandu snuggled down and would have happily stayed there all day. Tyler stroked him with a big smile. His mom said she hadnt seen the boy smile for weeks.

(5,005 posts)Sometimes I think humanity is on the cusp of another Dark Ages, what with global warming, overpopulation, rampant greed and unimaginable cruelty.
Then I see a few instances of simple human kindness and I think maybe we're gonna make it through all this shit after all.
