Americans are convinced by report claiming minorities are taking jobs away from whitesNo, minority workers are not taking jobs away from white people.
Yet, that’s the conclusion some drew from a controversial report recently released by the Economic Cycle Research Institute. After a New York Times columnist wrote about the report this week — highlighting the disparity in recent job gains by race — readers have resolved whites were “left out” of the nation’s financial recovery and are victims of “economic disenfranchisement.” But other economists argue that the analysis tells an incomplete story of what the economic recovery has meant for various demographic groups. To start, the report asserts that of the more than 5 million jobs added since November 2007, the pre-recession employment peak, more than half went to Hispanics — a stunning proportion that accounts for four times their share of the labor force that year. ![]() http://news.nationalpost.com/news/world/americans-are-convinced-by-economic-report-claiming-minority-workers-are-taking-jobs-away-from-whites As Buffalo Springfield sang, paranoia runs deep...

1. I thought they were all unemployed and getting welfare?
So which is it - are minorities taking all the jobs, or are they leeching off welfare?

6. And to think that I've been told that the only reason
employers hire illegal aliens is because Americans won't do those jobs. Things like cleaning hotel rooms. Picking tomatoes, beans, other crops. Building canals. You know, the jobs that have traditional belonged to immigrants. Which is another way of saying they won't pay a decent wage, or even the minimum wage for such jobs. so they turn to people desperate enough to do them for a sub-minimum wage.

8. Employers ought to be facing real prison time for those illegal hiring practices
Americans are willing to do any job, no matter how dangerous it may be, provided employers are willing to pay them enough to live on, so I call bullshit on that excuse that there are no jobs for Americans.
It's high time to put real teeth in the immigration laws on the employer side by making it a felony to hire immigrants unauthorized to work legally in the US, with hard, mandatory minimum prison time as punishment, not just merely fines, which amount to nothing but the costs of doing business. |

12. Yep. Whenever you hear some employer complaining that Americans
just aren't will to do the job they offer, you need to ask "What are you paying?" and "What are the working conditions?"

10. The thread title
is borrowed from the National Post (minus the word economic -- "economic report" -- for the sake of making it fit).

If they are indolent how can they take away their jobs.

13. Too simple of an answer.
The jobs that most people won't do - pick lettuce in heat, shovel tar on 100 degree roofs - sorry, don't see long lines for those jobs, so yes, minorities will take those.
Labor jobs are gone because either the resources are deleted or the companies are sold/overseas (wont' come back) or jobs are eliminated by technology. The corporations have done their best to destabilize and eliminate the unions. Congratulations However, what isn't being spoken of are the H1B visas and people having to go to India to train their replacements. There are tons of qualified Americans (regardless of race) that aren't getting jobs because of age or salary or perceived "flight risk". So the real headline is: Corporations giving away jobs to the lowest bidder - regardless of origin. |
