Personal Note: I have to caution that it sounds like the kind of massive heart attack that killed my mom. I didn't kill her right away but it caused so much damage to her body that it eventually shut down. positive vibes form someone who's been a Fisher man since I was seven years old.Carrie Fisher is being treated in an intensive care unit after a serious medical emergency on a flight, according to her brother.
On Friday night, Todd Fisher told The Associated Press that his sister was receiving excellent care, but said that he could not classify her condition. He had earlier told the AP that she had been stabilized and was out of the emergency room.
In a subsequent interview, he said many details about her condition or what caused the medical emergency are unknown, and much of what had been reported was speculation.
"We have to wait and be patient," he said. "We have so little information ourselves."
TMZ and the Los Angeles Times reported that the actress, best known for playing Princess Leia in the Star Wars film franchise, was on a flight from London to Los Angeles when she went into cardiac arrest. TMZ reports that the emergency occurred about 15 minutes before landing, and an EMT on the plane administered CPR before landing. The plane arrived just after noon PT and Fisher, 60, was rushed by paramedics to the UCLA Medical Center.

(26,324 posts)If her condition was as bad as initially reported then the quotes from the brother are either inaccurate or something is getting lost in translation here.
He's quoted as saying she is stable and "out of the emergency room" ... but she is in intensive care. Some reports say she is on a ventilator.
Reading between the lines of what the brother says still doesn't sound good.
Hoping I'm very wrong.

(61,692 posts)In error. (Let's hope.) And flying more than two hours can trigger blood clots in some people. But if they were correct, then she'll be in ICU until they have run multiple brain function studies. This could take time. I'm glad they were able to get her out of the Emergency Dept.
I hope and pray she recovers well from this.

(70,074 posts)they fought like hell to revive him, even tho they knew he was out of the sweet spot to revive him. they got his heart going, had him on a ventilator, but his eeg was all over the place.
they made us wait several days to pull the plug while their did THEIR requisite number of tests.
and as someone else mentioned, people to get blood clots on those long flights. happened to a friend of mine. they didnt catch it right away, and he ended up pretty sick. but at least it didnt hit his heart.

(20,165 posts)to come to her bedside and say their goodbyes. I've yet to see any actual reports that she is on a ventilator. It's more "I heard..." without any actual back up. Besides, I doubt her brother would share that info.
Of course, an "unnamed source" may tell TMZ and you'd better believe they'll run with it. I've been keeping up with her status from articles in the LA Times and AP.

(26,355 posts)If the flight crew and other people giving CPR and other emergency aid to her were quick, and their CPR technique was good, she may have a chance. I suppose the only thing to do is wait, see if her brain comes back online.

(2,747 posts)My daughter, Carrie Fisher, is in stable condition.
If there is any change, the family will share the information at that time. To all her friends and fans, I thank you all for your prayers and good wishes.

And at the risk of being vilified here, she's a smoker. Why the hell anyone continues to smoke in this day and age when we understand how truly terrible it is, what damage it does, is beyond me.
I have a sister who started smoking at age 13. At age 42 she had a serious heart attack, nearly died, and resumed smoking. WTF?? And of course smokers all get incredibly defensive when confronted by this, and it's so frustrating, so discouraging for their friends and relatives. She is still with us, at age 69, and it's possible she has finally, finally, stopped entirely, but I don't know.
I sincerely hope Fisher recovers, and I further sincerely hope she never smokes another cigarette again.

(25,224 posts)I'm the same age as Carrie. It is obvious she not only smokes, but is a heavy smoker.

(25,841 posts)after what happened the other day, and suddenly it occurred to me, THAT'S the face of a smoker. So I googled Carrie Fisher smoking and lots and lots of pics of her showed up. And yes, the voice of a smoker is incredibly obvious.
And I guess, since I've never smoked, I just don't get the sweet, seductive addiction, but it just angers me that anyone took up smoking after the 1964 Surgeon General's report.
And what's even more frustrating is the extent to which smokers are in total denial.
I read The Cancer Chronicles by George Johnson recently, and I highly recommend it. The essential point I want to make is that not only has cancer been with us pretty much forever (dinosaurs got cancer) and with rates largely unchanged for millennia, the ONLY thing that matters in whether or not you'll get cancer is smoking. Every other supposed risk (other than certain genetic factors, and even they aren't all that strong) is trivial.
Smoking also hugely impacts heart disease. Well duh.

(25,841 posts)not to mentioned fossilized bones, are quite rare overall. And the fact that fossilization is itself unusual. Chances are they got other cancers also, but we haven't yet seen the clear evidence of that.

(26,355 posts)Smoking feels good, because of that sweet, sweet nicotine, so stopping is hard. Even when it's killing you.

(2,297 posts)I flew across the country to say goodbye. His sisters were praying 24x7. They were nice older women, but uneducated. My cousins, dentists, and doctors, told me he is dead, there is nothing left, that is how we talk, but they could not say that to their moms.
