Pasadena, CA (WLTX) - Actor Williams Christopher, who played Father Mulcahy on the iconic TV series "M.A.S.H.," has died, according to his family.
His son told KABC and KNBC in Los Angeles that his dad died Saturday at the age of 84. Both reports say Christopher died of non-lung small cell carcinoma.
Christopher began his career on the stage, then transitioned into guest-starring parts on television. He also had regular roles on "That Girl," "Gomer Pyle USMC," and "Hogan's Heroes."
In 1972, he was cast as Mulcahy, the chaplain of the fictional Korena War medical unit portrayed on M.A.S.H..

(27,813 posts)... was one of the best-written, most three-dimensional characters ever created for the TV screen - and sadly often overlooked as being just that.
He really WAS the personification of Jesus as he would have been in the chaos of modern warfare - ever mindful of the frailty of the human spirit, yet also mindful of the true Christianity displayed by those who put the welfare of others above political concerns.
I cannot imagine any other actor bringing that character to life as fully as William Christopher managed to do. His portrayal of Father Mulcahy - a self-deprecating religious confidant who often found his own Church's teachings at odds with the on-the-ground realities of combat - was a moral lesson in following the spirit of Christ's message, as opposed to adhering to a rigid interpretation of the words of The Nazarene.
RIP, Mr. Christopher.

(4,104 posts)I know exactly how you feel. My dad died in December 2009 and it was such a strange and sad feeling to go into 2010. Like you're leaving a piece of yourself behind.
My best to you in the New Year.
