Happy New Year DU!
Our beloved President Barack Obama just released his final New Years message and it puts our president-elects childish taunting to shame. Our POTUS looked back on all we have achieved as a nation in the past eight years, the recovery weve made from the disastrous Bush years and the progress weve made as a people.
Hearing him list off some of his accomplishments, one can only swell with pride at his genuine pleasure he expresses not because hes proud of personally having overseen it, but pride at the resilience of the American people and honest gladness that their lives are better. The Obama Recovery has been a huge success. 20 million more Americans have affordable healthcare, an all-time high graduation rate from high school, average household income is up by 5.2%, same-sex marriage has become the law of the land, diplomatic relations re-established with Cuba, and the signing of the historic Iranian nuclear peace treaty are just some of the things that hes done over the past eight years to make our country stronger and safer for the future.
He ends on this humble note:
Its been the privilege of my life to serve as your President. And as I prepare to take on the even more important role of citizen, know that I will be there with you every step of the way to ensure that this country forever strives to live up to the incredible promise of our foundingthat all of us are created equal, and all of us deserve every chance to live out our dreams. And from the Obama family to yourshave a happy and blessed 2017.
Such leadership and humility are shockingly absent from the holiday greetings sent out by President-elect Donald Trump, who instead decided to taunt his enemies and labelled anyone who criticizes him an enemy of the country. The comparison between the two couldnt be more obvious, and we can only hope that the checks and balances installed in our government will be able to protect President Obamas achievements from the greedy plots of Trump, his fellow oligarchs, and the safety-net cutting Republicans in Congress.

(40,190 posts)are no longer there. Both the house and senate will only serve to further advance the wickedness of Trump. All that is left is the citizenry and we must hope that there will be strength in a sustained resistance. Otherwise we are doomed.

(39,308 posts)We must stay strong in every way and use all that's at our disposal. Right shall win out, at least some of the time over these next long years.

(16,672 posts)Not saying it's going to stop everything but it's going to slow the crap down at the very least as lawsuits are filed etc.. There are some still in place that will do their job by the law.

(5,730 posts)very fast. We will see the fastest approval of Fed judges in history, and there are many open spots. The Republicans will do that and tax changes before something goes awry. Im usually optimistic, but unless the Dems become as obstructionist as the Republicans, which is not our nature, and I have been proud of that, they are going to change the landscape for decades. Perhaps, it wont matter even if we are obstructionists. A few things will stay, gay marriage, peace Cuba, maybe some Trumpcare (hard time even saying it) will replace Obamacare...so that 23 million won't lose insurance, but, given his appointments, like Jeff Sessions, plus they already have Mitchell McConnell and Paul Ryan, I think it is a sea change. I'm glad we have Pelosi. Harry Reid would not have retired, even with his Med problems, but he expected Hillary to win. Howard Dean should reconsider Dem Chair. We have E Warren, Sanders, but the numbers don't add up. We need people like Reid and Dean who will call them out in strong language.

(7,402 posts)Thanks to the Supreme Court. ACA has failed to contain costs and insurance premiums are going through the roof. At the same time insurance companies are bailing out and the plans that are left are pricy and offer crap insurance. In the last two years my daughter has gone from a gold plan with $750 deductible, with dental insurance to, for the same price, a silver plan with $5,050 deductible and no dental insurance.
The only repair available is single payer and that will never happen. Within 4 years the number of uninsured will be back to where things were before Obamacare came along. Will anybody even notice?
The other items are all solid though. It has just gone unreported the damage the Supreme Court did with the ACA.
flamingdem
(39,308 posts)Very low deductible and copays and monthly. But I realize it's different depending on whether the state has a choice in companies.
I should know but can you explain how the Supreme Court caused the pricing issues? Agree we need single payer, badly
DallasNE
(7,402 posts)Without their own exchanges. That means that sick people have to get regular insurance and that drives insurance companies out of the market and all that is left is the crap insurance that people were leaving behind.
In Nebraska my daughter is forced to pay $325 a month for an individual plan with $5,050 deductible and no dental or vision coverage even though she is disabled and cannot work.
