(31,106 posts)I dont know if he is smart enough to manipulate and profit from these actions or not, he is generally speaking not very smart about anything, including business where he has a track record of failure and cheating hard working people.

(111,052 posts)Whether he does it deliberately or not, that is the effect on the market. That is why GM was so quick to respond. They know his game.

(733 posts)and that is what Trump's tweets are all about. He is saying to the business community: I can drive your stock price with a tweet.
And that is why he attacks his critics:"With a tweet I can generate death threats."
Already the media is afraid to call out lies of trump and his right wing nazis, although the media use the cover of "objectivity". And companies do not dismiss his claim to be making jobs . . .
This is the fundamental tactic of a demogogue.
The next is to delegitimatize the government institutions . . .
So don't just write off Trump's tweets; they serve to consolidate his power, not only by threats, but by sowing confusion and misdirection. By tweeting ambiguous messages that grab the attention of the media without really articulating a policy, he undermines his critics.

(42,585 posts)It was time-stamped at 7:30 am, two hours before the market opened. Yet, , GM opened higher, and then, like the rest of the market, which also opened stronger, tailed off over the course of the morning.

(42,585 posts)Notwithstanding the Hill report, the time stamp on Trump's tweet is 7:30 AM, two hours before the market opened. GM closed on Dec. 30 at 34.85. At 9:30 today, it opened up 15 cents to 35.00. An hour later, it had climbed to 35.45, before dropping over the next half hour to 35.12. As of 11:48, it was back down to 35.03. The rise and fall of GM stock reflects the Dow as a whole today, which opened strong and has tailed off over the course of the morning.
Investors are savvy enough not to overreact to a tweet such as this.

(1,213 posts)..but couldn't the stabilization have occurred as a result of GM's measured response to his tweet? And there is a lag-time before people largely become aware of his ridiculous crap.
