He believed it was rigged and so he took steps to 'balance' that by recruiting help from Assange.

We see a lot of positive press about Assange from republicans. Palin has even reversed on being hacked herself.

That's why it's so important to them that:

1) Assange didn't get the info from the Russians.

2) The Russians didn't hack the election.

They were in touch with both. That's my theory anyway.

Especially if they are aware of the facts regarding the Russian influence on the election, which they should be.

Found out, it was at least by this date:

Trump urges Russia to hack Clinton's email

The campaign later attempted to clarify Trump's remarks, saying he wanted Russia to hand over the emails if they had them.

Donald Trump Calls on Russia to Find Hillary Clinton’s Missing Emails

By ASHLEY PARKER and DAVID E. SANGERJULY 27, 2016

DORAL, Fla. — Donald J. Trump said on Wednesday that he hoped Russian intelligence services had successfully hacked Hillary Clinton’s email, and encouraged them to publish whatever they may have stolen, essentially urging a foreign adversary to conduct cyberespionage against a former secretary of state.

“Russia, if you’re listening, I hope you’re able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing,” Mr. Trump said during a news conference here in an apparent reference to Mrs. Clinton’s deleted emails. “I think you will probably be rewarded mightily by our press.”

Mr. Trump’s call was another bizarre moment in the mystery of whether Vladimir V. Putin’s government has been seeking to influence the United States’ presidential race.

His comments came amid questions about the hacking of the Democratic National Committee’s computer servers, which American intelligence agencies have told the White House they have “high confidence” was the work of the Russian government.

I would say McConnell know at least by this date, and the donald probably did too.
Found the answer:

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said the Senate should not confirm a replacement for Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia until after the 2016 election — an historic rebuke of President Obama’s authority and an extraordinary challenge to the practice of considering each nominee on his or her individual merits.

Mitch McConnell Tells Garland the Senate Will Not Act

Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the majority leader, has called President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee, Judge Merrick B. Garland, and explained that no action would be taken in the Senate on the nomination, Mr. McConnell’s spokesman said.

Mr. McConnell also informed Judge Garland that they would not be meeting in person at the Capitol.

“Rather than put Judge Garland through more unnecessary political routines orchestrated by the White House, the leader decided it would be more considerate of the nominee’s time to speak with him today by phone,” Mr. McConnell’s spokesman, Don Stewart, said in a statement.

“The leader reiterated his position that the American people will have a voice in this vacancy and that the Senate will appropriately revisit the matter when it considers the qualifications of the person the next president nominates. And since the Senate will not be acting on this nomination, he would not be holding a perfunctory meeting, but he wished Judge Garland well.”
