Mothers and Fathers out there - are you going to let your children enlist into the military to fight for Trump?
When and not if - Trump gets us into some war - will it be fighting for America or fighting for Trump?
I know if I had any kids that were wanting to enlist into the military now - that I would do everything in my power to talk them out of it.
Trump talked about strengthening our military. How is he going to do that if he won't have enlistees? I see no alternative for him but to re-institute the draft.

(5,754 posts)Right? I'm sure that the fundy folks who voted for Trump will be happy to enlist.

(779 posts)Of course Uday and Cusay wil be lining up to serve. Just like Trump did during Vietnam, was it five deferments?

(17,376 posts)Unless Trump has gotten us into a true global scale war, there will be no draft.
Absent such a war, I very much doubt there will be such a recruitment crisis that even brings the draft into the political conversation.

(23,338 posts)All or most draftees would have retired by now, assuming they stayed in.
Performance-wise, I didn't see much difference between folks who enlisted and those of us who got drafted.
But I agree that it would take a big war (China?) to reinstate the draft.

During his career, he was also a recruiter for the Navy - his message to the young recruits (considering the Marines and the Army were just doors away) "My rack, or Iraq" - he always met his goals...and yes, recruiters have monthly goals. I have noticed the military advertising more these days .....
Follow the money when it comes to war...all of the neocons are now just chomping at the bit...

(25,241 posts)Times have changed. We will have a maniac in the White House with a itchy trigger finger and the wrong motivation for going to war. I think people will think twice before committing to join the military or have their kids join the military.
In the case of Trump - a draft wouldn't be best protection against a war - but as necessary for him to be able to initiate a war.

(115,677 posts)Selective Service wants to hear from men and women in the community who might be willing to serve as members of local boards.
Local boards members are volunteers nominated by state governor or equivalent officials, and appointed by the Director of the Selective Service System on behalf of the U.S. President. They play an important community role closely connected with our nation's defense.
If a military draft becomes necessary, approximately 2,000 local boards throughout the United States would decide which young men in each community receive deferments, postponements, or exemptions from military service based on federal guidelines.
(Clip)
Local board appointments are for 20 years. The last largest recruitment of local board members was in Year 2000. In less than five years, a majority of Selective Service local board members will be reaching the end of their tenure.

(39,405 posts)All three conflicts could be dealt with in other ways.
The easiest way to kill ISIS is stop our allies in the region from arming, funding, and trading with them, and for our government to stop using those sorts of terrorists/mercenaries to overthrow governments we don't like.
With Russia, we simply need to stop putting weapons right on their border and replacing governments of their neighbors that were friendly to both the West and Russia with ones that are oriented solely to the West.
Russia is looking for markets for their oil and gas and Russia and China are looking for unified trade across Eurasia.
That leaves the US on the sidelines, but that isn't the same as being a threat to us.
Putin said before he wanted a multi-polar world where the US would be the first among equals for the foreseeable future.
It's just any version of "equal" that bankers and corporations are choking on.

(39,405 posts)and have made repeated hostile statements, including Hillary's plan to start a no fly zone over Syria, which could have led to the US shooting down Russian planes.
And since Hillary supported the Iraq War and various interventions since including overthrowing and murdering Gaddafi in Libya, it would be foolish of any leader to take those plans as idle talk.
and we are fighting ISIS in Iraq and sort of in Syria.
Although if we truly wanted to fight ISIS, a good start would be telling our allies to stop supporting them with money, training, and arms, and stop buying oil and other loot from them.
And our government themselves should stop using Islamic extremist/mercenaries to overthrow governments they don't like, a strategy that predates the public hearing about it in Afghanistan in the 1980's.
Our "defense" would be a hell of a lot cheaper with less offense.
Read some history like Stephen Kinzer of the NY Times OVERTHROW for background on why our government overthrew various other countries governments all the way back to Hawaii. It is always about capturing or protecting assets for the 1%.
You might also read Naomi Klein's SHOCK DOCTRINE for the history of how we "helped" Russia after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

(3,064 posts)He's stupid enough to do it and it would scare the hell out of Porsche SUV soccer moms as it would be obvious that a draft would be essential.
Twelve dead a week in the MidEast you don't have a lot of worry your boy is going unless he comes home and announces that he's enlisted.
We're still the strongest military power on earth but a standing army of millions will be considerably more formidable than militias using IEDs and AK-47s.

(16,089 posts)two of my three sons are turning 18 within the next 4 years.
I don't want to see them going to war over this creature's bruised ego or to pay his debt to Putin.
I don't want to see my kids or the kids of other moms dead or horribly injured.
I suspect it will happen fairly soon though. Of course, there will be loopholes so that the children of the wealthy don't have to go.

Neither of our sons, now 24 and 26, ever had any interest in following in either mom or dad's professional footsteps, which was fine by us - especially the no military part.

(4,516 posts)Basic training starts the day after HS graduation or the day they turn 18, even if they don't graduate. 2 years should be long enough to complete the indoctrination. People won't be able to: apply for a job, open a bank account, receive medical care, buy a car, rent an apartment or leave the country until discharge papers are validated. Any attempt to defraud this system will be considered treason...

(17,493 posts)hacking of the DNC and John Poderta's email and the release of this email to WikiLeaks was an act of war. One is John McCain who always seems to want to go to war with someone. Remember this little incident?
Now that I've turned 70 perhaps I am lacking the testosterone of younger men but I don't want to see anyone start another stupid war. I've seen far too many during my lifetime. In passing I am a Vietnam Era vet.
I have already told my grandsons to avoid joining our military as they will not be fighting for freedom and democracy but for the big multinational corporations and the military industrial complex who run this nation.
I do feel the Russians should stop interfering with our elections but we should also stop interfering with elections in other nations. Be aware we don't always wear white hats like the good guys in the old Western movies.

(9,808 posts)Consider the Quakers. Your understanding of the Light and Leading are entirely up to you, because truth is a continual, individual revelation. Many Quakers are non-theist or deist. Some are polytheist and universalist. The crucial component is a commitment to Simplicity, Peace, Integrity, Community, Equality and Stewardship. Living up to those is hard work; we recognize that. They're a goal, and the value is in the journey.
We have nice, quiet meetings. Also, cookies and activism. And varying definitions of peace and pacifism. (Says the grown-up punk, life-long Quaker who used to Bloc when I still had young joints. Defense of others is not necessarily a use of force.)
