So I'm sitting waiting for the mechanic to come out and tell me the damages. And in walks a man in Packers gear and sits down next to me, so we start talking about the obvious... the football game tomorrow against the Giants and Aaron Rodgers. He tells me that Aaron Rodgers is a born again Christian. And you can tell that because he is a very generous guy. And that's what born again Christians do - they do all kinds of good works, but they are very low key about it and don't draw attention to themselves.
I could smell a Trump voter here but I kept my mouth shut because I didn't want to start a big argument.
Born again Christians generous and humble? Not in this generation.
Now Aaron Rodgers is a really great quarterback. He is reportedly very smart and generous. If I were a football player or coach I'd certainly want him on my team. But I don't think its fair to claim someone is on your "team" when they've never said so. I've heard him make a few comments about God, but not like someone who self-identifies as a Christian - not like some of the athletes out there. He spoke onstage at an event I went to regarding conflict minerals in Africa, and has been involved with the Enough Project. He has a liberal intelligent girlfriend. Claiming him for your born again team is pretty disingenuous.
Of course, when you call Trump a Christian, the term has already gotten pretty cheap.

(100,063 posts)His fraternity nearly got kicked off Vanderbilt for violating university discrimination ordinances. Don't know if that translates to Aaron's beliefs or not.

(17,302 posts)because there's also this report. When I first read about this several months ago, I thought it was just speculative. Since the Washington Post picked up on it, there's likely something to it.

(16,829 posts)it's nobody else's business. His job is to play football.
Everyone came up with all kinds of reasons the team wasn't doing so well. Now that they've had 6 straight wins are the critics going to eat their words?

(20,411 posts)Its unclear exactly which denomination Rodgers adheres to, but based on the fact that, according to this source, he asked Jesus to be his savior when he was very young, one could easily make the assumption that Rodgers is some kind of born-again Christian.
and according to Rodgers himself . . .
I feel like my stance and my desire has always been to follow a quote from St. Francis of Assisi, who said, Preach the gospel at all times. If necessary, use words. So basically, Im not an over-the-top, or an in-your-face kind of guy with my faith. I would rather people have questions about why I act the way I act.

(45,806 posts)husband always talked about born again Christians. asked them what that means. They said they were not any religion when they first got married but after several years they became interested in the Methodist religion. They joined a Methodist Church and became "born again", meaning going back to God. They were both strong Democrats. The Church they joined welcomed all people, including LGBT. Their pastor even performed two gay weddings.
I also have a nephew who used to be on the NO Saints team some years ago. He was "born again" and was a very RW nut!
It seems like they all agree the phrase "born again" means getting back with God, but THAT means something different to each individual.

(29,149 posts)So born again and conservative aren't as synonymous as some would have you believe.
IIRC, I've read that Rodgers is an evangelical Christian, but I could very well be wrong. I do remember that he was explicitly critical of the "locker room talk" excuse for Trump's sexuality assault comment, and when he spoke after the election, he was diplomatic but decidedly unenthused: I hope as a country we can now come together and work a little better with each other. Obviously there are some people, rightfully so, who are worried about the direction of our country now, but I think its an important time for us to come together and figure out how to work with each other. (16,829 posts)rather than as someone who is conservative.
When I went to the conflict minerals rally where he spoke, he talked about not wanting to use a phone whose manufacture was based on use of minerals from the Democratic Republic of Congo. The mining of electronics components is intertwined with human rights abuses, especially the rape of women.
He was a popular write-in candidate for President, but conceded that Harambe got more votes.

(29,149 posts)I read it that way, and it seemed to me that it was decidedly anti-Trump. There was no hedging or anything in his comments. And I read his "rightfully so" after commenting that people are concerned about the country after the election comments the same way (though I suppose it's ambiguous). Rodgers has been a union rep, has supported (iirc) Wisconsin's teachers and union workers when they were being attacked by Scott Walker, and he went golfing with Obama. He may be an evangelical, I don't know, but he certainly doesn't strike me as a conservative.
