DUers, am at a loss about your voting system in the US.
Voters are encouraged to vote, yet Mrs. Clinton got the popular vote but lost, how does every vote count when the candidate got the most votes. Something is wrong with the system. You all have to fight this voting injustice in order to ensure asshole trump is only a one term president. This guy is going to undermine America and all the values President Obama fought for.

1. We don't have a direct democracy. An antiquated system that favors smaller states.

2. I couldn't follow the electoral votes as some states with smaller
populations had more electoral votes as compared to a bigger state such as LA. Seems to me that if the powers that be want to stay with the electoral votes, it should be comparable to the population! I believe that is why Mrs. Clinton lost but let me tell you, four years of Trump is a fucking nightmare!

3. Our electoral system, voting procedures, and tabulation procedures
are all archaic and broken. However, certain vested interests (read GOP) won't let us change them.

5. Why is the GOP so powerful in the US? We had Clinton and then Obama.
Both tried for electoral reform. Frankly, I feel that canvassing for money for adds should be illegal. Every party should be given a budget to campaign on. Unfortunately, money rules in the US, which sucks! Having to raise billions of dollars to campaign is retarded!

7. We have an urban/rural division now
and the rural areas are considerably over represented. We need to fix this and get the money out. Both are tall orders.

8. I know what you mean, but I do not think President Obama was not representing
all of America. The effing GOP Senators pledged from day one to make him a one term president and obstruct him all the time, that they accomplised. Now you have asshole trump, what a fucking nightmare!

4. I completely agree...
We're working on it... don't expect it to change anytime soon.

6. I know, President Obama said it quite eloquently in his speech earlier.
Change takes time. I just hope the younger generation believe his words as they will be making the changes.

9. The constitution specified candidates be elected by a College of Electors
to be convened in every state. It was thought that this gathering of educated men would prevent any dangerous demagogue from advancing to the presidency.
What went wrong is first that the number of electors has been badly apportioned and second that they've all forgotten how to do their job of protecting the country. They've become rubber stamps for the popular vote in that particular state, most of them apparently having forgotten why they are there in the first place. That's our system. Unless we scrap the electoral college, we will continue to have presidents who lose elections put into office and they will continue to be mistakes. |
