This is different than the "debunked" Rather Bush AWOL story

Last edited Wed Jan 11, 2017, 12:08 PM - Edit history (2)

I said this months ago. The Deplorables have destroyed objective truth. Even if Trump didn't pay Russian hookers to pee on one another to defile a bed the Obamas once slept on it sounds like something he would do and that's all that matters. Now all the Deplorables can do is chase their tails debunking the story.

ON EDIT-We do not have enough information to make definitive conclusions whether or not the account is apocryphal. Maybe it is true. Maybe it isn't.

1. It was the rightwingers who invented this culture of neverending conspiracy-theories.

Remember when Obama wanted to use "Jade Helm" to invade Texas?
And use the military forces of the UN to close down all golf-clubs?
And so, so many more.

Now they have the honor of reading neverending allegations against their President.

3. Well, Bush really did go AWOL from the Texas National Guard.

Even though the documents sent to CBS were phony. Unfortunately, the phony documents became the story. In the end though, the story was just a sad testament of Bush's character in the past, not a current matter of national security.

That being said, that was then, this is now, and we'll see how this plays out. My gut still says the dossier is authentic.

there was a poll, reported in the NYT on whether proof that he even deserted would change the percent of people for him. The result - it didn't. It was already baked in that GWB was "young and irresponsible" then. This could have hurt in 2000, but he was then a CIC in wartime.

As to Trump, this garbage should not have been repeated unless there was an open and shut case and impeccable sources. This makes us look like the right wing fantasizing on what could REALLY be done in a DC area pizza place. We are better than this.

This is especially so because just reporting what Trump has done, not paying workers, and things he has himself said.

In fact, this idiotic Buzzfeed story actually might be used in the way the Rather documents were - to discredit the real problems with Trump.

8. Real or not - the damage has been done

Through out the late summer and fall - esp after the pussygrab tape - enough stories came to the fore about disgusting, salacious behavior - that this is plausable. The fact that it has become the buzz is because it is *not* unbelievable - to everyone except his most diehard fans (that is those who went to his rallies back in the primary era.) That is how low is credibility.

Then his behavior towards Putin and Russia suddenly are cast in a different light. Yes, that is nothing new to us - been screaming about it since last Spring - but to the general public?

It won't sink him (yet), but it does likely put some of the steamroller aspects of this new administration onto a different course, as some of their congressional support will grow shakier and shakier.

To those evangilcals who fell in line to vote "for the Supreme Court" - who since the election have been hearing words from the pulpit equating Trump/Party etc as 'favored by God' or some such drivel - real damage is going to start to be done. Since the election some in these ranks have argued to 'give Trump a chance' - or even fallen harder into line (party) - but they have not long been on the Trump Train. Expect the ill-ease will accelerate. Because how can one view the "God sanctioned American Exceptionalism" lines along with what "God now wants Russia to direct American policies?" I think some of these politically behelden mega churches are going to end up with long time blowback for aligning so tightly to a political party as to compromising their own faiths tenets. Ya, many of us have seen this for some time - but as the trump Presidency falls into disarray - the incongruity will likely become large. Can't predict what that means, but I do think it is a game changer going forward.

Another point to consider how big a deal per public perception this is: Comparison time for so-called fake news breaking into the main stream media/public conscience. How many people heard of the absurd "Pizza/gate" story before the shooting at the pizza place? It was all abuzz in the fringiest places of the internet. Hell the new NSA advisor to Trump tweeted about it in late October (i believe) which says HOW LONG that had been floating around in the ether. Most folks - not even a lot of Trump voters - (outside perhaps for the fore mentioned die hard fans) were aware.

This has just gone from fake news to major discussion point. Why? Not because it is true - but because it could be true - and even if it isn't true his strange behavior towards Russia and Putin will be viewed differently as folks wonder (not just us) what Putin/Russia has over him. What deals and ways of acting in the interest of Russia over the interest of the US are underway? CREDIBILITY of the level that GOPers on the Hill will soon have to weigh the costs of being to tightly aligned with Trump. Folks within their party have been screaming this for more than 12 months - but the trump train just kept gaining momentum.

Finally - gleefully I had - the phrase "Republican Values" has been forever altered.
