So... the way kompromat works is a carrot-stick process. The first carrot was probably money. Either off-book loans or "investments" (money laundering) when the casinos were teetering. This is old, much older than 5 or 8 years.

Then there's flattery. Lots of flattery. Handlers know how to identify what will ingratiate themselves into their target's good graces. In cult terms, we call this love-bombing.

Only after the carrots do the sticks come out -- and by then, the handlers know what will shame and humiliate the target. What will shame you may not be what will shame me, and neither of us may find the specific shame at all humiliating. But it matters to the target. At a visceral level.

But a target cannot be subjected to too many sticks without enough carrots, or they'll decide that the humiliation is worth enduring to make the blackmail end. It's a delicate balance, and good handlers know how to walk that line.

Narcissists are extremely easy targets for all sorts of scams, from MLM to cults to espionage, because they believe they're in control, that they're smarter, and that they can scam the scammer. But that makes them extremely vulnerable, because they don't think they can be taken.
