They had two goals: create plausible deniability that the deplorables could latch on to, achieved by the 4 chan claim and Conway and Trump's conflation of the Buzzfeed release and CNN reporting, as though they were the same.
Intimidate the press: Trump did that during his press conference and Kellyanne continued it on CNN.

Baghdad Bob would be in awe.
