there's a simple reason why it's good to start an investigation into comey now:

yes, of course, donnie could kill the investigation as soon as he takes over.

but in order to do that, well, he'd have to kill the investigation.

and that looks really, really bad.

will point to that time to claim that his prosecution proved that Reagan and Bush were not aligned with him. We all know otherwise.

I don't think Trump cares about optics as much as Reagan and Bush did, though.

i don't think donnie needs to kill the investigation.

worst case from the russopublican perspective is that comey actually is charged. he plead to a minimal charge, pays a fine, maybe is barred from holding a government job for five years or something, and is on probation for 1 year. hell, fine, maybe he actually goes to prison for a short stretch.

meanwhile some rich russopublicans shower his family with money and he walks out of prison a millionaire, then milks the book/talk show circuit for millions more, celebrated as a hero among russopublicans and why should he care that democrats hate him.
