There are 1200 applications for bus parking for The March on Washington and 200 for the inauguration.
To recap:
No entertainment
No major bands in parade
No vast busloads of outside WA attendees
This is gonna be fabulous!

(12,017 posts)We will try to hunt down a protest to join on the 20th, and then will be in the women's march on the 21st.
If you're attending, there's lots of great info (including advice to buy your metro cards by mail) here:

(12,017 posts)A friend sent me this link:
Wear comfortable shoes. Youll be on your feet all day.
Wear thick socks. See above.
Dress in layers. The forecast right now is calling for 50s and cloudy, so thats good, but be prepared if it goes lower, because standing around for 6-8 hours in 40-ish degree weather can put a chill in your bones.
Bring a hat, and gloves, even if you think you wont need them.
Do not, however, bring a backpack. Or a big purse. Nothing that you can be grabbed by, and, alas, nothing that can be pickpocketed. You see this March as a way to express your lefty opinion. The opposition sees it as a way to protest your expressing that opinion. And crooks see a crowd as a golden opportunity. That backpack on your back is too big a target for both those guys.
If you need something to carry stuff in, a diagonally-slung fanny pack is your best bet. Into it, or into your pockets, you want to put:
Your ID drivers license, that sort of thing.
About $100 in cash.
One credit card.
Your insurance ID (I know, but shit happens).
Whatever medication you cant live without, a 24-hour supply in a prescription bottle.
Your DC Metro card, which I hear you can buy in advance on the DC Metro site. Whenever you buy it, make sure to load it with enough money to get you back to your hotel or meeting point after the March. Otherwise youll be standing in a very long line.
Your cell phone, and a spare battery charger for same.
Sunglasses.
Lip balm.
Whatever you use for energy snacks. Im partial to Lara Bars, myself. There wont be much opportunity to buy food along the route or at the Mall, or wherever we end up.
In another pocket, put a piece of paper with your name and emergency contact number(s). If either you or your cell phone keel over, and/or your fanny pack goes missing, this will be useful. Also, if you get arrested (see below) theyll take your cell phone.
Water? Opinions differ, but Im against it. Its just another thing to carry, youre not likely to dehydrate to the point of danger in 6-8 hours on a cloudy day, AND:
There will be very, very limited opportunities to pee. Do not head to the March straight from your Vente Latte. A word to the wise.
Now: in case of trouble?
Keep an eye out for people in green baseball caps that say either Legal Observer or LO. Theyre there to keep an eye on law enforcement. If you get arrested, try to get your name to one of them. Theyll track you through the system so you dont get lost.
Do not resist arrest. If the cops havent specifically noticed you when theyre doing a sweep kind of thing and you can run away, by all means be my guest. But once a cop has decided to arrest you, resisting either physically or verbally is like arguing with an NBA official. It never changes their minds and can get you in worse trouble.
Be polite to the cops. Call them sir and maam. Do what they tell you. Youre out there because youve chosen to exercise your First Amendment rights. Theyre out there because the brass told them to be, and the day before we get there, these same cops will have worked the inauguration. Theyre not the enemy.

(377 posts)For those going to the parade route, only take what will fit in your pocket. The entry points to the parade in 2013, a fun, joyous event, confiscated all liquids, backpacks, anything large. I had a small, foldable backpack in my pocket so I would be able to carry whatever outer clothing I removed.
Security on Inauguration Day is crazy tight.
Anyone else planning to be on the parade route?

(2,297 posts)They have a million vetted tips like max size of allowed bags (8x6x4), with slightly larger clear bags allowed for meds or childcare, no weapons including signs supported by sticks, it is too late to order Metro cards, what stops to get on at (end of the line), etc. The security is being vetted with the event organizers. Many protesters will obviously protest the rules on bag size, signage, but do not be surprised if that means losing the bag or the sign. Strollers and leashes for kids are good 2 go. Lots of kids, lots of nursing age babies, this will be a kid friendly event. There are 2 official organizers that are posting every day and the rules change daily. If you do not understand why many rules, as many Facebookers are having an issue with, stop at your movie theatre and watch Patriot Day.

(90,515 posts)....the usual SoCal caveat of dressing in layers. So I was planning on bringing a daypack for bulky items and a fanny pack for essentials (ID, glasses, money, phone, and one credit card) that I can keep close to my body.
We also have to absolutely back on time at the pickup place to get back on one of our busses, no do-overs for the 100 mile trek home. My friend came up with what sounds to me like a great emergency plan: get to the airport and hop ground transportation home. Hubby says the march will actually end up not terribly far from the train station, so that is another option.
So that's my tip: stay with your friends, and have an emergency plan to get back home.
One final word for all of us: be on the lookout for agitators and if you can't shut them down by calling them out on their shit, give them wide berth. They are not our friends.
