...doesn't dismiss the criminality, just because the cops don't carry guns.

These issues of campaign finance are restricted to the court of public opinion, until legislators (and Courts) agree to prohibit the influence of big money on elections.

...and hasten the constitutional crisis.

Don't think these folks aren't deliberately trolling for a confrontation. Each and every one of these watchdogs has the integrity to put their jobs and careers on the line for what they believe in.

Like most of the press, legal action against them is seen as an excellent platform, a crowning moment for their craft.

...to run for public office.

I doubt there is a fine for such an offense? Most people would respect their fellow citizens enough to go along with the most basic simple rules of citizenship. Unless you are a citizen of some authoritarian government?

...more than it's meant to be punitive.

The agency isn't prepared for that kind of enforcement, and it makes sense to me. Pols handing out justice to other pols is always awkward and subjective.

If Americans can't find the will to confront these abuses and hold these politicians accountable, there won't be any real justice. That's largely the design of our democratic system of government.

Reflecting on the present election of Trump, something is seriously broken in our democracy, even beyond the system, which is almost entirely up to US to fix.

At Edwardsville, Illinois, on September 11, 1858, Abraham Lincoln said:

"If the Almighty Ruler of Nations, with his eternal truth and justice, be on your side of the North, or on yours of the South, that truth and that justice will surely prevail, by the judgment of this great tribunal, the American people. By the frame of the government under which we live, these same people have wisely given their public servants but little power for mischief; and have, with equal wisdom, provided for the return of that little to their own hands at very short intervals. While the people retain their virtue and vigilance, no administration, by any extreme of wickedness or folly, can very seriously injure the government in the short space of four years. "
