Report: CIA set up task-force in 2016 to investigate possible Russian funding of Trump's campaignhttps://finance.yahoo.com/news/report-cia-set-task-force-162553783.html
A US counterintelligence task force was established by the CIA in 2016 to investigate possible Russian funding of President-elect Donald Trump's presidential campaign, the BBC reported on Friday.
The task force included the FBI, the Treasury and Justice Departments, the CIA, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, and the National Security Agency (NSA).
It was set up after the director of the CIA, John Brennan, received a recording of a conversation about money from the Kremlin going into Trump's campaign coffers, the BBC's Paul Wood reported. The recording was apparently passed to the CIA by the intelligence agency of one of the Baltic States.
On October 15, the task force was granted a warrant by a judge in the FISA court named after the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act to intercept the electronic records from two Russian banks that may have been implicated in the money transfer, a senior intelligence official told the BBC. Trump was not named in the warrant, but three of his associates were the subject of the inquiry.

(2,795 posts)Trump and his thugs are such dirty players, I would think this mob family will shut down any investigations. Or can the CIA continue to investigate but if the congress chooses not to do anything about it, it's just an investigation that goes no where?

(5,191 posts)It's quite possible. If it's revealed that he took Russian money, coordinated with Putin, and Comey sat on all of it, they may be forced to act to save themselves.

(7,429 posts)It should be obvious that the informed public is about 6 months ahead of their politicians on this issue. Congress will have to be dragged, kicking and screaming, into taking this stuff seriously. And they'll only respond when the Trumpies start abandoning ship and getting enraged that Trumpy's being blackmailed by Putin. Like our politicians, however, the Trumpies are about 6 months behind in "getting it."

(9,865 posts)...the Repugs won't investigate. The country turned on Nixon during Watergate because the Senate investigation was televised and unfolded in very watchable, dramatic way.
The press was a little more journalistically responsible in those days and for sure there were some Repugs who really did put the country before their party. That won't happen this time.

(1,237 posts)Trump adviser had five calls with Russian envoy on day of sanctions: sources
http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-trump-russia-idUSKBN14X1YX
"Michael Flynn, President-elect Donald Trump's choice for national security adviser, held five phone calls with Russia's ambassador to Washington on the day the United States retaliated for Moscow's interference in the U.S. presidential election, three sources familiar with the matter said."
"They spoke on condition of anonymity, citing internal U.S. government deliberations about the issue."
These sources sound like they work within the intelligence community, and if they're confirming phone calls between Flynn and Moscow...

(382 posts)It'll be like Wall Street and the Great Recession. Lots of big talk about throwing all the big bankers in jail. Then proceed to scapegoat a couple of low level players with a couple years in the Condo Prison, while the criminals get off Scott-free, er...Trump-free, including the big Cheeto himself.
No, at this point, I'm pretty skeptical. I'm too exhausted from all this drama. And Hillary STILL won't be our president. I'll be gettin' back to studying my "Indivisible Manifesto" now.

(9,512 posts)...EVEN IF this all gains traction and *rump is compromised, there is no constitutional mechanism for undoing or redoing an election. despite a rigged election the best we can hope for constitutionally is pence, and i don't believe the repubs would mind that at all. IF there is sufficient evidence to indicate the election was invalid, clinton should be president, but constitutionally that can't happen, ergo, constitutional crisis. (as an aside, there is also no telling yet if congressional elections were "hacked" in some way and therefore if the republican majorities are valid.)
