1. The majority of my mother's family lives in Western Europe.

After living through two World Wars and on the edges of the Cold War, they embraced NATO with open arms. They view it as a better alternative than the neutrality they embraced up to 1945, and the second invasion and occupation in the 20th century. Most of their country's police force has spent time as part of NATO's forces.

This is the old Fortress America thing, the idea that we're wasting money on weak NATO allies, and we would be better off withdrawing into our own borders and defending ourselves with sophisticated super weapons.
