Wife of Orlando nightclub killer Omar Mateen arrested in East Bay California
RODEO Seven months after 49 people were killed in a terrorist attack in a Orlando nightclub, the FBI on Monday made its first arrest in connection with the massacre: killer Omar Mateens widow, who grew up in the East Bay.
Noor Zahi Salman, 30, was taken into custody by FBI agents Monday morning at her family home in Rodeo, where she and the young son she shared with Mateen moved to be with relatives in the aftermath of the June 12 attack on the Pulse gay nightclub. Mateen, 29, was killed by police during the attack, which was the deadliest massacre by a single shooter and deadliest incident targeting the LGBT community in U.S. history.
Salman was booked at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin on federal charges of tampering with a witness, victim or informant, according to public records. Orlando police Chief John Mina said that Salman has been charged with obstruction of justice and also with aiding and abetting by providing material support to a terrorist organization. It was not possible to reconcile those two sources: The details of the charges appeared to be under seal on Tuesday, not visible to the public in the federal court records. No bail was set. She is scheduled to be arraigned at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Oakland, according to the U.S. Attorneys Office.
Salman told the New York Times in November that her husband was abusive and led a secretive life. She denied having any knowledge of her husbands murderous plans, despite reportedly once attending the Pulse nightclub with him. She said she had been living in fear since the massacre.
