More than 40 Democratic lawmakers now skipping Trumps inauguration-- look whose name is missing

Here is the list. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/powerpost/wp/2017/01/16/more-than-30-democratic-lawmakers-now-skipping-trumps-inauguration/?utm_term=.9c19a171b2cd

One name I don't see on there is Bernie Sanders. There are other sources saying he does plan to attend. https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=Sanders+inauguration

What's up with that? How do the DUers who pilloried Hillary for agreeing to attend feel about that?

My own view on the subject remains unchanged. I really wish Hillary would not attend, and I don't understand why she feels compelled to do so. As for Sanders, I'm not surprised. I wonder, however, if some of his most ardent supporters are, particularly those who were so critical of Clinton's decision?

Too bad he and Hillary are attending the inauguration. It legitimizes it. If Bernie skipped, it would be no big deal. But here's Hillary's chance to say this election was stolen but... status quo.

Tell me what constitutes "absolute denigration" in my OP? I asked a question to those who condemned Hillary for agreeing to attend the inauguration: Do they hold Sanders to the same standard? Rather than reflecting on that question, the response is to insist my asking that question is bashing or "absolute denigration." I didn't insult him, malign him, or call him any of the names that are commonly leveled at Hillary and other Democrats. In fact I called him nothing. To label anything I've said here as "absolute denigration" is blatantly false and frankly bizarre. It's also reflective of what we saw during the primary, in which any question about Bernie's views or policy positions was met with condemnation that we had no right to even ask. Is it that commitment to hierarchy over equality that I find so unacceptable, but it is absolutely central to the climate around Sanders. My view is that elected representatives should serve the people, not the other way around. That is why I will never be able to establish common ground with those who insist on holding one man above the rest of humanity.

I'm just tossing your own term back at you. I basically copied exactly what you wrote and changed the tenor to describe your constant berating of anybody who still thinks Sanders is an ally.

Somehow you have proven my point with this statement: "...I will never be able to establish common ground with those who insist on holding one man above the rest of humanity." Since i didn't do or suggest any such thing, and this reply was to me, it appears that you are the one showing complete inflexibility.

BTW: I like an awful lot of your posts, but this belittling of allies who have the slightest difference of opinion is unbecoming of an otherwise thoughtful poster.

Across the Capitol, some of Trump’s loudest foes have been less vocal about whether they’ll be in attendance to watch the country’s 45th president sworn into office. Democratic Sens. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Sherrod Brown of Ohio didn’t return requests for comment.

Liberal stalwart and one-time presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders had a simple response when asked about going to the inauguration as he blazed past reporters in the Capitol basement: “Probably.”

You can find many explanations of the use of "Democrat", this one is the first one that pops up:

http://www.factcheck.org/2007/12/the-democratic-or-democrat-party/

The ‘Democratic’ or ‘Democrat’ Party?
By Justin BankPosted on December 7, 2007

Q: Is it the “Democratic” Party or the “Democrat” Party?

A: The proper term is “Democratic Party.”

FULL QUESTION

Why does everyone keep referring to the Democrats as Democratic? … Is the use of Democrat as an adjective by Republican talking heads grammatically incorrect? Is it malevolent? Does it have a strategic value?

FULL ANSWER

The party traces its roots to 1792 and the anti-federalist faction led by Thomas Jefferson. The Jeffersonians called themselves “Republicans” at first, and later “Democratic-Republican.” The party splintered in the late 1820s, and the faction led by Andrew Jackson in his successful presidential campaign of 1828 became the modern Democratic Party. It formally adopted the name “Democratic Party” at its convention in 1844.

However, some Republican leaders have made a habit of referring to their opposition incorrectly and discourteously as the “Democrat Party.” The reason isn’t entirely clear; it may be meant to imply that the party isn’t sufficiently “democratic” in the general sense, or may just be meant as a petty insult. In August 2006, Hendrik Hertzberg traced this Republican usage, which he termed a “slur” on his party, back to the 1940s. He says it was used by opponents to needle the powerful Pendergast organization in Kansas City, which backed Harry Truman. He also says it was used often by the late Sen. Joseph McCarthy.

More recently, President Bush has used the term regularly, even employing it in his 2007 State of the Union address when he said, “I congratulate the Democrat majority” in Congress, referring to his own party’s defeat in the mid-term congressional elections the previous year. He did that either deliberately or out of habit; the prepared remarks that he was reading, and which had been given to reporters beforehand, used the proper name of the party.

now that Bernie is going, nothing should be said. We should all just move along, nothing to see here.

Personally, I'm okay with her going as it is a sign of strength and her husband is an ex-President. If anything, Bernie is the one who should not be going since he set himself up as the anti-Establishment lampooner. But he sure likes the cameras and seems to be relishing the spotlight, so I guess he's not so anti-Establishment after all.

Oh, convenient framing: lawmakers.

But, unlike Hillary, Bernie doesn't have the option of snubbing Cheeto, since he--and all the other Democratic Senators--will have to be there to deal with his depredations as best he can.

Of course, given the Democratic penchant for shooting themselves in the foot, it is not surprising that some would want that to continue. Can't break with tradition, can we?

Congressman Al Green is a good man http://algreen.house.gov/press-release/congressman-al-green%E2%80%99s-statement-2017-presidential-inauguration

(Houston, TX)—On Monday, January 16, 2017, Congressman Al Green released the following statement on the 2017 Presidential Inauguration:

“Today, we celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.; on Friday, President-elect Trump will be sworn-in. For some time, I have been hearing from many constituents with varying points of view on the question of whether I will attend the inauguration. My response is Dr. King was right when he indicated: On some issues ‘cowardice asks the question, is it safe? Expediency asks the question, is it politic? Vanity asks the question, is it popular? But, conscience asks the question, is it right? And there comes a time when we must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular, but one must take it because it is right.’

“I will not attend the inauguration because conscience says it is the right thing to do.”

Why should any Democrat in "other states" with gun violence and states like mine where we've had two of the worst mass shootings listen to an Independent from a state who has never had a big problem with gun violence?

We're looking for solution's and he gives it all away with his fondness of the NRA

And I don't malign Bernie in the OP at all. What I ask is how those who condemned Hillary Clinton for attended the inauguration feel about Bernie's attending. Rather than reflecting on that question, the response of you and others here is to attack me for asking it. That echoes the attitude from the point he first entered the race that mere citizens have no right to question him or his supporters are about anything. I do not share the view that a great man, whether Bernie or any other member of the political elite, is superior to citizens. We are repeatedly told he is the only one fighting against Trump, when that point isn't even remotely clear, when a number of elected officials have been far more forthright in doing so.

I have been repeatedly lecture that I need to pay homage to Bernie because he is superior to everyone else in public life, yet now you rely on an excuse that everyone else is doing it. In addition to not being true, it contradicts the assertion that he stands above the rest of politicians.

Bernie and supporters here very recently falsely maligned Corey Booker as a corporate sell out. That I posted another perspective on that amendment was likewise condemned as trashing Bernie. You are of course free to take every word he says uncritically and reject any information that might contradict anything he says, but you will not succeed in enforcing blind obedience on those of us who care about more than one politician's career.

I have absolutely no respect for the type of mentality that takes a mere question as "bashing," particularly when those same people have spent months and years insulting Democratic representations if quite graphic and sometimes vulgar terms. And yet a simple question asked whether those people who regularly malign other Democrats will hold their hero to the same standard. The answer is of course no because, I believe, the point is not any particular principle or action but the enforcement of hierarchy, one that betrays a conservative worldview in which a great man as seen as superior to mere citizens. Bernie supporters are of course not alone in that view. It reaches across the political spectrum and is among the most troubling aspects of our current political culture.

Wed Jan 18, 2017, 10:09 AM
Jan 2017

He is the Rep for the 4th District of NC, where I live.

Our other two Dem Reps have already said they won't go.

Before the Repubs gerrymandered NC, we had a ratio of 7 Dem and 6 Repub House Reps in 2010 which pretty much reflected
a fairly evenly split state. After they gerrymandered, the ratio went to 9 Repubs and 4 Dems in 2012 and then 10 Repubs to 3 Dems in 2014.

In 2016 Dem House Rep candidates received 2,142,661 votes across the state; Repub House Rep candidates received 2,447,324.
If districts were drawn to reflect those votes, there would be 6 Dem House Reps and 7 Repub House Reps.

Fu*king Republicans.

Jan 2017

This is from Juanita Jean http://juanitajean.com/way-to-go-congressmen/

Then, an hour ago, Congressman Joaquin Castro announced that he will not attend. His press release says …

“Every American should respect the office of the presidency and the fact that Donald Trump will be the 45th President of the United States. But winning an election does not mean a man can show contempt for millions of Americans and then expect those very people to celebrate him.

“I come from a family and a place, Texas, where respect is a fundamental value – respect for people regardless of what they look like, where they were born, or whether they share your view of the world. Donald Trump has shown an utter lack of respect for so many Americans. His attack on civil rights hero John Lewis is the latest example.

“I will not attend this year’s inauguration ceremony. However, I will be in Washington to greet constituents who are traveling to our nation’s capital for the proceedings. I respect their choice to attend.”

I am hopeful that Sheila Jackson Lee, Mark Veasey, Gene Green and a couple more Texas congresscritters join in
