Young Americans need to boycott military service and refuse to serve. They should also avoid the National Guard as well. We do no need a more huge military. As of now we will cut everything else to increase the DOD budget to never heard of heights.
Besides if you serve now and get hurt you will be one your own. With the privatization of veterans health care and the pending end of the present military retirement system MAKING A 401 K there is no reason to make the service a career. Since you will have to leave the military by 45 or 50 in combat arms you will not be able to get your retirement until near 60 with a 401k.
Also because the GOP wants to turn military health care over to the private sector with a voucher you will not be able to afford insurance. And if you are on disability you will also have to use a voucher even if you have no limbs.
Besides the only thing you are protecting with our military will be the billionaires ability to exploit the planet and the country. And there will be less freedom under Trump.

(10,749 posts)But two factors argue against this happening.
First, the economy being what it is, jobs are not always available and the military is the only options.
Second, this country has come to fetishize veterans. Really, no disrespect intended. I'm not diminishing the value of military service, the commitment to this sort of service, and, in some cases, the risk. But, really, we have fetishized military service and veterans, and, as a result, veterans receive preference for most government and many private sector jobs, thus creating a militarized element in these environments. This is especially true in law enforcement. And the veterans are not necessarily the best qualified. (And, no, I didn't lose out on a job to a veteran. It's just an observation that too many people are reluctant to acknowledge.) Plus, the "creation" of veterans has resulted in the creation of a massive government agency - the largest outside the the military itself - to support these veterans for the rest of their lives.
Another, somewhat related thing to keep in mind. trump has vowed to create a 350-ship navy. There are currently about 275 ships, I believe, and the cost of this increase is estimated at $1.5 trillion over the next 30 years. And you know full well that that number will be left in the dust. Those additional ships and related support, if it happens, which I doubt, will require personnel increases in the navy of tens of thousands of sailors and civilian defense staff. And now I digress a bit more. And while we spend this kind of money on the military, other nations will be spending money on its people - health care and social programs - renewable energy and other productive technologies (as opposed to apps and services).
