(11,904 posts)My boss's husband is a funeral director. Been with the company quite a few years (about 30). He picks up the body, does embalming, does the basic makeup (they get a hairdresser to come in and do the women's makeup and hair), meets with the family for planning, drives the hearse or limo at the funeral and moves the flowers. Kind of a funeral "jack of all trades". He's on call quite a bit over holidays 24/7. Oh, and he's expected to dress to the nines (gets a $500 clothing allowance, but is required to spend it at Jos. A. Banks).

(7,997 posts)The funeral home picks up the body and does what needs to be done to send it to be cremated. I know I don't want my family spending thousands of dollars to embalm me and put me in a box so people can walk by and lie about how great I look.
