Texas Dem: Migrant students were called "beaners" by Trump inauguration attendees in DC
Rep. Filemon Vela (D-Texas) Thursday tore into President-elect Donald Trump Thursday in a series of tweets explaining his decision to boycott the president-elect's inauguration.
Vela blasted the Trump for not having any Hispanic representation in his Cabinet and for turning a "blind eye to overt racism."
"I had hoped that this Fridays Inauguration would be a moment of healing and outreach...but yesterday, two days before the Inauguration, two things occurred that leave me no choice but to boycott the event," Vela tweeted.
Vela said that his decision to skip the ceremony was influenced by a lack of Hispanic Cabinet officials and an incident in which he says people in Washington for the inauguration used racial epithets to refer to students from his congressional district.
"While in DC, 40 migrant students from [Texas's 34th District] were subjected to comments of 'beaners,' 'burritos,' and 'wetbacks' from Inauguration attendees," Vela tweeted.
Vela continued, saying Trump then announced his final Cabinet selection which led to "no Hispanic representation in the cabinet for the 1st time in 36 years."
"Mr. Trumps repeated acts of disrespect for the 33 million Americans of Hispanic descent are historic in modern times," he tweeted.
