The federal judge who halted President Barack Obama's 2014 executive actions on immigration is backing away from a demand for personal data on tens of thousands of so-called Dreamers who got work permits that violated a court order.

Immigrant rights advocates had expressed concerns that U.S. District Court Judge Andrew Hanen would require the federal government to submit the data to the court and then would turn it over to state governments, something the judge said he was considering as a remedy for what he viewed as the federal government's defiance.

However, in a 19-page opinion filed just hours before Donald Trump is scheduled to be sworn in as president, Hanen said the submission of the personal data was unnecessary because he had concluded that misstatements by two government lawyers were unintentional and did not appear to have injured the states who brought the suit. ....
