Shocking poll numbers tell of a uniquely difficult path for the new commander-in-chief. And thats before the inevitable scandals start
Last modified on Saturday 21 January 2017 05.23 EST
Today marks the beginning of the end of Donald Trumps presidency.
snip//
What passed before as media outrage now has a measurable impact on his presidential polls and by extension his presidential power.
What passed before as a sycophantic discussion with his own attorney now opens the door to endless litigation and the clear and present danger of impeachment.
What passed before as a curious cozying up to Vladimir Putin is now transformed into a multi-agency investigation into illegal foreign payments to undermine the election.
We should not confuse populism with popularity. Trump enters the Oval Office as the weakest new commander-in-chief in living memory. Having lost the popular vote by almost 3 million, he has no political mandate to speak of. And his disastrous poll numbers are hard to overstate.
snip//
Almost every scandal gets compared to Watergate, but very few genuinely deserve to be mentioned in the same breath. Of course, Watergate wasnt potentially financed by our mortal enemies in Moscow, even if it did involve undermining a presidential election.
The last covert plot between a presidents inner circle and an enemy state was Reagans illegal gun-running operation to Iran. Perhaps thats what Trump means by stealing Reagans slogan about making America great again.
Now that hes the 45th President of the United States, the rules of this game have officially changed. Donald Trump cannot trash tweet his way out his problems any more. The constitution does not provide for that particular escape pod from Air Force One.
The TV star is now the desperately flawed lead in a tragicomedy, the author of his own misfortunes. If our bodies are our gardens, this president has unnaturally orange thumbs.

(31,109 posts)nets, i.e. Medicare and Social Security as well as others, if I wanted nothing more than to wipe out the legacy of FDR, LBJ and Barack Obama, I would let the Russians help me install a crazy nut-job so he could be impeached so my perfect tool, Pence, could take over.
Of course the election is not valid since the russians interfered and we must all agree on one thing, this is not a valid cabinet and WH, not at all, not today, not even or especially not even if he is impeached.
Pence is just as non-credible as Trump, Pence or Ryan, none of them can be in the WH....Hillary won the election, Russians hacked the election.

When he gets as much from tRump as he thinks is possible, then video/audio tapes will appear that have been held back.
But he will have to choose his moment wisely. tRump might thwart Putin's scheme by running his administration off the rails sooner than Putin thinks.

(1,040 posts)I thought he would get his dose of humility in the general election. (After all the Republican primary was just a reality tv show.) But he will be on the main stage in front of the World, when he is exposed.

(28,858 posts).. about government since their intention is to destroy
most of it.
They DO know how fascism works and they have lots
of money and corporate power behind them.
Agreed.
Their intent is not to govern, but to rule. Republicans cannot tolerate any idea that is produced by any group other than themselves. I.e., Obamacare. They must be the masters of the uncleansed, the unenlightened, etc.
We must submit to them. Destroy the United States and the rule of law in order to create Baptistan. Because they alone know the truth.

(4,558 posts)I'm sorry, but while I was asleep, did he release his tax returns alleviating the concern of his financial ties to Russia?
Was his Trump University judged a viable educational forum providing some kind of benefits to the students?
Is there new evidence that his foundation wasn't just an extension and tax shelter for business operations?
Is there new evidence that he never really was an adulterer?
Was the taped recording of him just grabbing beautiful women by the pussy found out to be a fake recording, and not actually his words coming out of his mouth?
Was the myriad number of women who have accused him of everything from rape to at best gross sexual misconduct proven to all be false claims??
Were the blackmail sex tapes that Russia has on him actually proven to be non-existent?
Were his bankruptcies, failed business dealings, cheatings of contractors proven to be false?
Are the well documented facts that he and his families manufacturing is largely outside of the US proven to be incorrect?
Overall, I completely agree with what this article says, but the opening premise that his scandals are something to occur down the road is a bit.. well.. misleading in the unspoken assumption that he isn't already bagged down in a large number of scandals.

(43,137 posts)We had our War of Independence, and deposed, toppled, ejected,
removed, and in some cases worse, foreign leaders and those we fought
in wars. If we didn't win Vietnam, or Iraq was costly, or Afghanistan remains
undone, those guys didn't win either.
This will be no exception. Americans fight for freedom. No matter what it takes.
I'm seeing low-level permanent displeasure at this point, the kind of thing where
everyone protests in their own way, could be reducing spending, attenting rallies,
joining groups, blogging, obeying the speed limits - it all adds up.
This is like a company that clamps down on workers with more work, mandatory
overtime unpaid, inflexibility, short lunch breaks. You do your job, but the work
slows down, the quality falls, more inputs needed to package or repair, and
eventually the costs add up. Management has failed to motivate with the carrot,
they only used the stick and it bit back.

(11,843 posts)when they lose their "ACA, not OBAMACARE!!1!!1" health insurance, when they lose their jobs in the inevitable economic downturn, when Trump's policies hurt them personally. That's when his honeymoon is over. It just looks like it is now because he is a horrible piece of shit, he is riding as high as he can, right now. We will look back at this as the high point of his presidency.

America First?
EVERYTHING will be for America. (The world works through mutual gain)
Military parades and overt shows of force? (What, resuming above ground nuke testing?)
Then he invokes the religious deities to side with us against other cultures he wishes to eliminate.
We all know he means straight white evangelical America. (I thought we were the United States of America) I guess that was too hard to say. OR does he mean South or Latin America. He should listen to Barack's speech from 2004. "We are not a white America...."
This is a Vegas marriage and many of those end at sunrise.
NO HONEYMOON!
