Trump's inauguration crowd: Sean Spicer's claims versus the evidence

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/jan/22/trump-inauguration-crowd-sean-spicers-claims-versus-the-evidence#img-1
<snip>
White House press secretary’s angry declaration that the media faked low attendance does not stack up against photos, videos and public transport figures

“No one had numbers because the National Park Service, which controls the National Mall, does not put any out,” he said, before going ahead anyway to declare that Trump had attracted “the largest audience ever to witness an inauguration” in person and in the world.

“These attempts to lessen the enthusiasm for the inauguration are shameful and wrong.”

Crowd estimates can be fraught with difficulty and there is indeed no official figure. But images of the National Mall on Friday contradicted Spicer’s assertions – particularly when compared with pictures from Barack Obama’s inauguration in 2009 and the turnout for the Women’s March on Saturday.

Meanwhile, photographs show the National Mall packed with crowds just before Obama’s inauguration in 2009 – but much more sparsely covered with people just before Trump’s ceremony.

Does not site this propaganda conference as proof that there were millions of people at the innaguartion, and, instead, fights back. After all, the administration just held a conference just to call them all liars. But, given how they have been holding his hand for the last two years, I won't hold my breath.

That Trump had to tore him a new one for letting the press tell the truth about how pathetic his crowds were. You could tell Spicer was not having a good time at the propaganda conference.

If Trump tried to stiff them out of their pay because they didn't do a good enough job.

is that there were thousands who were "trapped" in the tunnels leading to the inauguration screening areas and, seating who were unable to get in. Most notably, the "Purple Ticket holders" and eventually "Silver Ticket holders" who ended up mixed in with the doomed Purple ticket holders. So there were many more who would have appeared in the shots had they not still been trapped in line.

If you look at the Guardian link, you'll see that the photos are scaled so that the crossways (and buildings on either side) more or less match up.

If you look at the second crossway from the bottom of the picture on the Trump photo, you'll see some (presumably temporary) buildings have been erected. Why would they erect such buildings unless they did not expect the crowd to extend that far back? And it doesn't - by a considerable measure! On the Obama photo, the crowd massively passes that crossway and also the next one. And probably some out of picture.

Can I assume the white material on the ground is some form of protection for the grass in the Mall? In the Trump photo, that protection is not present in the lowest section, but is present in the Obama photo.

Not only did they not achieve the number of attendees that Obama did, they knew it beforehand!

They're being accused of lying, and the proof that they're not is right in front of them.

Edited because I should know the difference between "they're" and "their".
