they were people who "accompanied" trump!
"Pool reports later indicated that attendants who were cheering and clapping when Mr Trump spoke were not CIA staffers but people who accompanied Mr Trump, Washington Post fact-checker Gary Kessler wrote on Twitter. He later clarified that it was unclear exactly who the people were, but senior CIA members standing in front did not react until the end of the speech."

(14,165 posts)To keep a running record of things like this as well as, statements, appointments etc he makes and put any Democrat politician in his place. Imagine for instance if Obama, or Hillary if she had won, having a tag-along cheering section to every press event.

(12,232 posts)There were about 400 members of the workforce who RSVPd for the event out of thousands who received an invitation in their email late last week. Officials dismiss White House claims that there were people waiting to get into the event.
So, yes, volunteered to attend, but, no, additional people did not want to go.
They flipped the facts upside down to give the impression they have more support than they actually do.

(34,042 posts)i watched it again
the cheering section appears to be off to trump's right
the people who were seated (or standing?) center don't appear to be clapping or laughing or cheering (i was looking for movement with their shoulders, heads, arms)
one guy did a lot of turning to the direction of the where the cheering section was

(12,232 posts)So, we can't readily identify the cheerleaders the way we could in another setting.
I'd bet that's one of the reasons they chose this, especially on a day he was being protested against by so many people.
Good point about the cheering section being on his right side and no movement of clapping from the few we can see.

claque |klak|
noun
a group of people hired to applaud (or heckle) a performer or public speaker.

(34,042 posts)"But Trumps seemingly warm reception might have been somewhat manufactured. The Washington Posts longtime CIA watcher, Greg Miller, tweeted Saturday that the audience was a self-selected bunch: CIA employees who signed up to come in on a Saturday to see the new POTUS. Mostly Trump voters. A pool reporter selected to witness the closed event indicated "the cheering and clapping was not from the CIA staffers but people who accompanied Trump, according to The Posts fact-checker Glenn Kessler. He later clarified on Twitter that it was "unclear who the people on the side were. But the folks in the front apparently did not react until the end." "

Or, perhaps he'll go whole hog and emulate Louis XIV:

(1,439 posts)An official with knowledge of the make-up of the crowd says that there were about 40 people whod been invited by the Trump, Mike Pence and Rep. Mike Pompeo teams. The Trump team expected Rep. Pompeo, R-Kansas, to be sworn in during the event as the next CIA director, but the vote to confirm him was delayed on Friday by Senate Democrats. Also sitting in the first several rows in front of the president was the CIAs senior leadership, which was not cheering the remarks.
Officials acknowledge that Mr. Trump does have his supporters within the CIA workforce, many of whom were interspersed among the rank and file standing off to the presidents right.

Probably why he kept looking to the right - his most ardent CIA supporters were there? The rows in front were clapping, but not going crazy.
FWIW - The CIA rep who introduced Pence confirmed the '400 CIA employee' thing.
