i was disturbed by all the applause during the cia speech but apparently they weren't applauding

they were people who "accompanied" trump!

"Pool reports later indicated that attendants who were cheering and clapping when Mr Trump spoke were not CIA staffers but people who accompanied Mr Trump, Washington Post fact-checker Gary Kessler wrote on Twitter. He later clarified that it was unclear exactly who the people were, but senior CIA members standing in front did not react until the end of the speech."

snip

"Robert Gifford @giff18
Pool: "Color from the CNN Producer: the persons who are directly in front of Trump have not shown any reaction...to his remarks.""

snip

"Robert Gifford @giff18
More from CNN Prod per pool: "...the persons who are on the side...are the ones clapping and reacting. We do not know who these people are.""

There were about 400 members of the workforce who RSVP’d for the event out of thousands who received an invitation in their email late last week. Officials dismiss White House claims that there were people waiting to get into the event.

So, yes, volunteered to attend, but, no, additional people did not want to go.

They flipped the facts upside down to give the impression they have more support than they actually do.

So, we can't readily identify the cheerleaders the way we could in another setting.

I'd bet that's one of the reasons they chose this, especially on a day he was being protested against by so many people.

Good point about the cheering section being on his right side and no movement of clapping from the few we can see.

"But Trump’s seemingly warm reception might have been somewhat manufactured. The Washington Post’s longtime CIA watcher, Greg Miller, tweeted Saturday that the audience was “a self-selected bunch: CIA employees who signed up to come in on a Saturday to see the new POTUS. Mostly Trump voters.” A pool reporter selected to witness the closed event indicated "the cheering and clapping was not from the CIA staffers but people who accompanied Trump,” according to The Post’s fact-checker Glenn Kessler. He later clarified on Twitter that it was "unclear who the people on the side were. But the folks in the front apparently did not react until the end." "

at public appearances. You know, with medals, epaulets, sashes, and a sword on his hip. A nice big hat with lots of scrambled eggs and a big badge would be a nice touch. Striped pants, of course. He could even add a gold-plated pistol in a holster on the opposite side from the sword.

Or, perhaps he'll go whole hog and emulate Louis XIV:

Mon Jan 23, 2017, 01:39 PM
Jan 2017
Authorities are also pushing back against the perception that the CIA workforce was cheering for the president. They say the first three rows in front of the president were largely made up of supporters of Mr. Trump’s campaign.

An official with knowledge of the make-up of the crowd says that there were about 40 people who’d been invited by the Trump, Mike Pence and Rep. Mike Pompeo teams. The Trump team expected Rep. Pompeo, R-Kansas, to be sworn in during the event as the next CIA director, but the vote to confirm him was delayed on Friday by Senate Democrats. Also sitting in the first several rows in front of the president was the CIA’s senior leadership, which was not cheering the remarks.

Officials acknowledge that Mr. Trump does have his supporters within the CIA workforce, many of whom were interspersed among the rank and file standing off to the president’s right.

Probably why he kept looking to the right - his most ardent CIA supporters were there? The rows in front were clapping, but not going crazy.

FWIW - The CIA rep who introduced Pence confirmed the '400 CIA employee' thing.
