"A house divided against itself can not stand." What happens next?

How long can a nation suffer cultural disintegration before the contradictions can no longer be reconciled?

We are two nations living on the same soil and have been for a long time. The split is between those who have made peace with diversity and modernity and those that haven't. There has always been a Band Aid to cover over the differences. Trump and the Deplorables have pulled the Band Aid off.

"A house divided against itself can not stand." That sentiment is as strong or stronger than when our sixteenth president expressed it.

What happens next?

Or more accurately a majority of the population demands it live up to it and a determined minority uses a gerrymandered system to stymie them.

it was worth the gamble to have him shake things up.

It wouldn't take but 5% of his voters to become disgruntled and he'd be toast in 2020.

In terms of the larger picture, there's no such thing as American values, and it doesn't mean anything to be an American anymore. But we have to peddle that bullshit to win elections, so we need to run candidates who actually believe it enough to sell it convincingly.

But they aren't the values of Trump and his followers.

It was obviously a shooting war. I predict our second 'Civil War' will be a financial one. With the citizens refusing to pay for the ignominies heaped upon them by their own government.
