Warren Shows Weakness In Massachusetts

January 23, 2017 By Taegan Goddard

A new WBUR poll in Massachusetts finds that only 44% of voters think Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) “deserves reelection” while 46% think voters ought to “give someone else a chance.”

“Warren’s numbers contrast sharply with those of Gov. Charlie Baker (R). His favorability rating is 59% — 8 points better than Warren. But what’s more striking is that only 29% of poll respondents think someone else should get a chance at the governor’s office.”

Said pollster Steve Koczela: “No one’s going to look at a 44 percent reelect number and think that that’s a good number. No one’s going to look at it being close to even between ‘reelect’ and ‘give someone else a chance’ and think that that’s reassuring.”

We are killing ourselves in this country. The GOP is the party of death and misery.

8. My guess (if this poll holds; it is of course very early)

is that there may be some dissatisfaction that Warren has tried to make herself a national figure vying for the spotlight, right out of the gate (from day one), rather than focusing constituent services and what is good for the Commonwealth.

I was involved in Mass. politics during the time I lived there, and the most striking thing I saw was how much activists focused on such things as constituent services and local issues. Ted Kennedy set the bar for that: he was tireless in helping out local groups in their efforts, as well as individuals; there was a lot of dissatisfaction with Kerry on that front: that he was very removed, unhelpful, distant. That said, he was re-elected repeatedly, as I suspect Warren will be. But she should be put on notice by this poll. She works for the constituents in her own state before getting her face on national television, which means focusing on the small stuff as much as the grandstanding.

This is what I know about Massachusetts politics, as learned as a founding member of a local chapter of Progressive Democrats of Massachusetts (even though I came as a newbie, having moved from another state).

She used to be a lot more serious and academic. I think some of her rhetoric now is a bit too simple and she seems more partisan than somebody with a lot of facts.

Also maybe she needs to be a bit more like Al Franken. I realize that when you are a star the party needs to have you rally the troops, but she needs to maybe go deeper on issues in her state and spend time there.

She's incredibly smart on the issues and we really need her so I think we need her to keep her poll numbers up.

7. Weren't the polls within the margin of error? The National Polls were right.

And let's not forget the Comey interference. So I'm not sure how off they really were. Some more than others to be sure.

Also Baker's numbers will be affected in 2017 as he tries to figure out how to be a Republican in MA when Trump is POTUS.

A year into his term as governor, Baker has remained popular by earning a reputation as a non-partisan "fix-it man."

12. The question phrased that way would result in negative numbers. In fact, it is Baker's that seem odd

I wonder what kinds of numbers Scott Brown got -- and if they were interpreted like this. ( I remember the same source putting out similar nonsense about Kerry in early 2007. He won with about 67% of the vote in the general and more in the primaries. In that case, it was closer and they could find no one in either party who did better than osing by about 20 points.)

The guy can throw a baseball, but after he retired, he's run a company into the ground and been fired from ESPN for opening his fat mouth.
