My brother in law grew up in a small town in Slovenia, just like Melania. Besides the Slovenian he had to learn Serbo-Croatian and another language like German, French or English at school. As parts of Slovenia belonged to Italia or Hungaria before the founding of Yugoslavia there are ethnic groups with Italian or Hungarian as first language whose children left school with knowledge of four languages. Tourism is a major part of the economy and has been since the 1970s, so speaking German and English is part of job descriptions for many Slovenians. Melania also lived in Italy and France, so I have no doubt she can at least speak some sentences. And while her English surely is not perfect, I feel there are other much worse things to criticize about her.
