Greenpeace Protesters Scale Crane, Unfurl 'Resist' Banner In Downtown D.C.

Seven Greenpeace protesters have caused a disturbance downtown this morning after scaling a crane at a construction site. ... Police blocked off 15th Street between M and K Streets, as well as L Street between 15th and 16th Streets NW. The 1500 block of L Street NW remains closed. *
The Metropolitan Police Department released a statement saying "while we respect everyone's right to protest, today's actions are extremely dangerous and unlawful. Multiple government resources are being tied up, and unfortunately streets are blocked while first responders try to safely address this matter."
MPD spokesperson Karima Bilal says that MPD received the call about disorderly conduct at 15th and L Streets NW around 5:59 a.m. Hours later, protesters unfurled a banner** that says "Resist" in protest of the new administration.
The crane is located on the site of the former Washington Post building, which is being demolished and will eventually house Fannie Mae. ... The incident is being livestreamed on Greenpeace's Facebook page and Greenpeace board chairperson Karen Topakian's Facebook page.

(56,886 posts)I wonder if anyone's going to tag "Surrender Melania."
It's no "Surrender Dorothy."
First, this is not a safe practice. CSX doesn't want you out on its bridge, especially in the dark, spray painting. Second, if you fall, you're in big trouble. That said:
Go Home Already: In On The Graffiti Tagger
Some context... Surrender Dorothy
It's in the Washington Post this morning:
Fugazi, a standout from D.C.s musical past, pops up in an unexpected place
Someone has painted "Fugazi" -- a famed Washington post-hardcore punk band -- on a railroad overpass over the Beltway in Kensington, Md., seen on Sunday. (John Kelly/The Washington Post)
Here's the reference:
Surrender Dorothy painted on a Beltway overpass whats the story?
A 1986 photo shows the Beltway overpass, close by the glistening spires of the Mormon Temple in Kensington, with the graffito. (United Press International)
The adjacent footbridge gets tagged too:
D.C. Temple graffiti prank won't die

WASHINGTON D.C. Who did it?
Who played the part of the Wicked Witch of the West and was the first in the early 1970s to spray paint the message "Surrender Dorothy" on an overpass on the Washington D.C. Beltway right where the Mormon Temple comes into view? The mystery is now, at least partially, solved.
Christine Mulligan of Germantown, Md., wrote to "Answer Man" John Kelly at The Washington Post last month to see if he knew the orgin of the painted prank.
He didn't at first.
....
Several people responded to The Washington Post's Answer Man's request for information.

(15,499 posts)Every one of us should at least send a few bucks or more if possible to Greenpeace. This is the kind of courage it's going to take to be a powerful resistance movement.
I was thinking today that maybe this is the second big cultural era of my life akin to the movements of the '60's when I was a young woman. It just does my soul good to see these things happening. First the historic marches all over the world, now this.
As Calimary said, we have to resist in any way we can. We also have to hang this on the GOP and not just tRump.
Bravo to Greenpeace activists!
