Did anyone else watch it? With Whoopi Goldberg?
In this episode, there was a segment where Van had previously interviewed some coal miners. There was one who was "famous" for an exchange with Hillary Clinton. Van asked him whether or not he would have voted for Hillary had the coal mining subject not been an issue.
His response was, of course, no. Because he is pro-life - all the while lamenting that "people think we are one issue voters and we're not".
Bullshit. It's always about abortion for these people!

(17,276 posts)Trot out things like "abortion" every few years and that settles the votes for so many. Not that the candidate is going to do anything about it!

(15,438 posts)Not doing anything to hold these propagandists accountable (via their pocketbooks) - like taking their tax-exempt status - is why it's getting worse and worse every election year.
They politicize from the pulpit with impunity!

Is that a problem?

JONES: You know you got famous because of the challenge you laid out to Hillary Clinton. If Hillary Clinton had a different position on coal mining, would you have voted for her?
B. COPLEY: No, sir.
JONES: Why not?
B. COPLEY: On the very fact alone of pro-life.
JONES: So many pundits have said if she hadn't offended those coal miners they would have voted for her. They don't know your heart. They didn't know that there was something underneath that that you also were concerned about.
B. COPLEY: Everyone always thinks that we're one topic people, you know.
LARDIERI: Like regional, yeah.
B. COPLEY: Yeah. And we're not.

Nay
(12,051 posts)you're surprised. The religious nuts and bigots truly do think this way. They're not about facts -- just what fits into their ideologies the best.

(15,220 posts)It's that I stay outraged that there is not enough attention paid to this fact.
I would say that 85% of the Trump voters who I know personally vote Republican because of the issue of abortion. Nothing else matters to them. Obviously, they have been willing to put a maniac in office as long as he claims to be "pro life".
The Republicans have used this issue masterfully over the last decades to divide and conquer.

(15,220 posts)"Getting along" with Republican voters is impossible because they won't compromise. "Getting along" in their dictionary means capitulating to their demands. Our only hope are the people who didn't vote.

(111 posts)Van Jones is really careful about how he tries to approach and reach out to the idiots. And I do believe that requires a careful and thoughtful approach.
God, Jeffrey Lord drives me crazy. All he does is talk about the Reagan era and tries to relate it to today.

(15,220 posts)I didn't see the segment last night, but I've seen Jeffrey Lord more times than I'd like to count. He is the male version of Kellyanne and he makes me want to barf!

(2,573 posts)really annoyed me was Van Jones lapping it up. He should of pointed that right out...that no matter what Hillary said or did they were not going to get his vote because of his one issue. Gets me sick.

(15,220 posts)I felt like she placated too much to the people asking questions. She also said that what Madonna had said at the rally was "wrong".
I was hoping she would have been a bit more steadfast in support of the Dems.

(2,573 posts)remember the man who's son died from the heroin "kill bag"...did Whoopi offer condolences? I think Van Jones even said before you answer I know you want to express your condolences...and then she didn't. Did I miss something ???
I saw a sneak peek of this program the other night so I had already saw what the West VA voters said in the first part...so when they came on I just switched the channel completely. I really could not watch it again.
And I'm really sick of all this outreach to Trashpot voters. Why do I not see the "other" side being reached out to...why does this look like a one way street.
hamsterjill
(15,220 posts)I noticed that, as well. That Van gave Whoopi the opportunity to say something to console and she didn't. I'm not sure if it was on purpose because the discussion was changing topics rapidly, etc., but you didn't miss anything.
I, too, am sick of the outreach. I don't need to understand the Trump voters. I understand them just fine. They are hate filled and ignorant. I also understand that they are never going to change and are never going to compromise. It'll either be their way or the highway, particularly on the abortion issue.
I'm not likely to change MY mind on that issue either, so we are at a standoff. It's their turn to give this time because that particular issue is none of their damn business. It's a private matter.

(2,573 posts)It's like night and day here. I am tweeting this moment to an abortion nut....here's a little sample: How many children have you adopted? I say castrate the men who are impregnating these women! You want to control my pussy then I want to control your nuts. Then let all these men raise these children since they are so righteous. I believe everybody should get an abortion and I want to force that opinion on you.
It just makes Whoopi look bad by not offering a "so sorry" etc...I can't even imagine not saying that. I deal with elderly customers where i work and they call to report deaths. NEVER have I had no empathy for the caller. To me it would be natural to offer a condolence.

(26,598 posts)Saw him at the march last Saturday. But I don't think I can watch this..Though I planned to. These people aren't honest about their beliefs... I'm sorry, a man who is for forced birth is anti woman, period, and will never vote for one.

(2,535 posts)I saw another one tonight and I am getting fed up with unions. Seems like that always vote against us. They make damn good wages and vote republican. Fuck Coal and I'll start riding a bike.
Van had two different groups and one was coal miners with one guy wearing an NRA cap in one of them and the other was a group of auto workers. I believe in unions but I think some, when working make too much money.
