http://gizmodo.com/amazon-sells-out-of-1984-as-america-decides-to-read-a-g-1791658901Currently 1984 is printed by Signet Classics, and both the hardcover and softcover versions are listed as temporarily out of stock. As CNN reported yesterday, Penguin (the parent company of the New American Library, Signets parent company) is racing to print more copies of Orwells novel. Under the Trump administration, quotes like, The object of torture is torture and, If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human facefor ever must be resonating with people. Go figure.

(5,477 posts)'1984' has two slots in the Top 20 (different editions), and climbing all the way to the #8 spot right now is Sinclair Lewis' 'It Can't Happen Here', followed at #9 by Aldous Huxley's 'Brave New World'. At #16 is Ray Bradbury's 'Fahrenheit 451'.
Interesting mix of titles...looks like people are reading a LOT about Current Events!

(16,423 posts)In "Fahrenheit 451" the dystopia was not brought upon them by some government.
Society decayed because people lost interest in art and things that force them to think or threaten their preconceived assumptions. (Remember how that group of insulated housewives suddenly starts to sob when they hear that sad poem?)
Those things got replaced by cheap, addictive entertainment: those people in Virtual Reality sitcoms are now your friends and family. (Remember how the marriage of the protagonist is falling apart because they have grown emotionally distant?)
You are now living in a bubble, an echo-chamber, where the outside-world cannot touch you anymore.
The book-burning was only the very last step in the birth-process of this dystopia.
