(60,010 posts)It seems strange to say he is mentally ill, but he is, and most competent psychiatrists will, almost surely do, recognize it.
I worked in Mental Health for 30 years and see it clearly.
This harping on what he does not want to see as a failure is very compulsive for him, he cannot stop himself.
He is getting so much derision because his illness is not well known.

(61,690 posts)Someone so divorced from reality near nuclear codes or commanding the best military ever. It's one thing to believe he'll give you what you want on some pet peeve item, but permit him to be this dangerous is criminal.
As a nurse, I've seen the signs in other patients, so it made it easier for me to see it in trump, although I'm no 30+ year expert like you.

(60,010 posts)and almost all people think of "crazy" as looking/acting like Manson, including the people around Trump.
by now his family has learned how to deal with him, I suspect.
think back to mad emperors and crazy kings and insatiable dictators....they were all allowed to be that way for varying periods of time,
because it was so hard for the average person to name the illness.
When one does a Mental health Status Exam, the key things you look for are:
does the person know date, time and place?
are they hearing voices?
are they suicidal or homicidal?
you know...."crazy"
I interviewed one young man who came across as very normal, passed the questions above, but something felt off, so I kept on talking with him,
and an hour later, out of the blue, once he had relaxed and trusted me a bit, he leaned forward and whispered that "they" were listening in to us
and pointed to an old painted over ceiling electrical conduit, as being how they listened to us.
Dead serious.
That opened the conversation to more pointed questions and he was admitted into the facility.
Often happens that way.

(901 posts)They're probably just working out the details. The guy is already mentally ill and is aging with, if I remember correctly, a family history of dementia, so maybe it's playing a role, too. Lots of people with dementia have delusional thoughts. In any case, tRump needs to be removed from office.

(25,237 posts)With respect to this dementia thing. One phase dementia patients go through is an angry phase. They lash out. I don't think we hit that phase yet. Katybar the door when we do though.

(60,010 posts)Worse yet, he has a feedback loop with Fox news..he says something, then watches Fox report on it, get re-inforcement, and gets mad if other stations don't report on it.
Saw a recent vid today of a press swarm with him, he was at a desk ( might have been on a plane) and he had the damn tv on so loud he could not hear their questions.
The kicker is...he could not stop looking at the tv for very long!
It was as if he was waiting to hear about himself.
frequent reports that he turns on tv first thing in am and keeps within range of one as much as possible.
I honestly think HE thinks he is in a reality show about being President.
