There were people on here who loved him, especially after some of the internal DNC emails came out, and were strongly pushing him in his primary against DWS.
To me and being near his district and seeing the race first hand, he was always a bit off, though. He would appear on staunchly right-wing radio shows like Joyce Kaufman and would be absolutely praised by them, even though he was running as a Democrat.
He also actively courted Republican voters, even though Florida has a closed primary system:

The reason I wonder about any Russian questions is that clearly the DNC email leaks were meant to embarrass the Democratic Party but especially its then leader, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who Canova was running against.
So I did a search on Canova and Russia and found a couple of curious things.
First was a Tweet of his from December 9, 2016, after the general election and when talk about Russian hacking really began to ramp up. A supporter of his says he was attacked by Russian hackers after he had spoken to him about an endorsement. Canova's response was interesting, to say the least:

I doubt Russians wanted @DWStweets 2win. Many US &foreign hackers use Russian servers 2cover tracks. Who would be against u endorsing me?

Then there is a rather bizarre, rambling Youtube video from just a few days ago. Canova says he's on his way to the Women's March (which you think, great, right?) but rather than talking about that, he instead spends most of the time on the now intelligence-verified reports of Russian hacking and out and out disputing Russia's role in it. He also talks about the spot where DNC staffer Seth Rich was murdered last year, which lead to a lot of crazy conspiracy theories that Hillary Clinton and/or the DNC were secretly behind the killing. And surprise, surprise, Canova does absolutely nothing to dispel any of those theories at all.
Oh, and he sees a squirrel.
Apparently, Canova's thinking of running against DWS again and I'm sure he doesn't want to do anything that would upset the heavily Democratic district voters, so hence his apparent participation in the women's march. But his out-and-out apologizing for Russia and seemingly adamant denial that they were involved in the hacking, where he stood to benefit from said hacking, has to make me wonder if this guy was aware of anything going on that might have tried to help him.
I don't know. The guy just doesn't smell right to me. Never has.

(43,173 posts)There were indeed factions in the DNC that favored Hillary Clinton over Bernie Sanders. It sounds more outrageous than it is, though. Even within a political party people will have their own factions.
The decision to leak the hacked emails wasn't based on illegal behavior, though. It was simply to exploit those factions and turn them against each other.
