I took it as a manifestation of his narcissism, where he thought he was better than everyone else (or, at least, me) and therefore didn't want to hear anything I had to say, only deliver his own opinions.

You see, when someone breaths in audibly through their nose during a conversation, it's because they are shutting their mouth. The shut mouth means they don't want to let the thoughts and words of anyone else in, they just want to open up only to deliver their own words.

This fits Trump perfectly. He doesn't really listen to anyone who might have an opinion different from himself. Hence, the sharp breath uptake during conversations where he might be contradicted, such as in a debate.
