Canada is considering contributing to a Dutch-led international fund to support abortion services in developing countries, set up in response to Donald Trumps order to halt financing of NGOs that support the practice.
A spokesman for Canadas international development minister, Marie-Claude Bibeau, told AFP the minister had spoken with her Dutch counterpart about the fund, and was considering donating an unspecified sum to it or a similar measure that would support sexual reproductive rights, including abortion abroad.
Sexual health and reproductive rights will be at the heart of Canadas new international assistance policy, spokesman Louis Belanger said in an email.
We will continue to explore opportunities to work together to advance womens empowerment by expanding access to sexual and reproductive health services including abortion, he said.
Because of the self-evident wonderfulness of this news, I think Canada has just cemented its position as a strategic target in the ongoing WWIII of Duginist Russia against global liberalism that is currently devastating the USA. Watch for massive and escalating attacks against Trudeau from the Canadian right, and major propaganda about this action flowing up from the USA.
Because Canada is one of the last fully successful examples of liberalism left in the world, we are next on the menu. The Duginists now have the pretext they need to open a new northern front.
Please, please, please read up on Aleksander Dugin if you don't know what I'm talking about. His strategic goals lie behind everything that has happened in the USA and many other places around the world.

(6,017 posts)Well....they specifically exclude people who might add cost to the Canadian health care system. Including people with pre-existing conditions which I would assume might include women seeking abortion. Also, unlike some other "liberal" nations they do not (yet) offer full LGBT anti-discrimination protection.
However, that's just concerning who pays for it. Regarding access, once the GOP completely prohibits abortion without exception Canada may be our only option ('cause with Mexico, you know, the wall...).

(15,568 posts)I moved to BC in 2012, and although we had to have physicals for immigration, there has been no restrictions for our pre-existing conditions. I don't know any immigrants to Canada who have been excluded this way. I think one's health issues would have to be extreme to be excluded from immigrating, and mainly for public health reasons.
Marriage Equality has been the law of the land for many years- I have met a number of LGBT folks who immigrated specifically for that reason.

(6,017 posts)It may well be up to whoever is making the determination? The section quoted was this;
"An applicant may be refused on health grounds if their condition: likely to be a danger to public health or public safety, or might reasonably be expected to cause excessive demand on health or social services"
Their guess and I suppose mine, was that the person doing the evaluations may have had a bias against trans people (both people in question had done everything expensive years prior) or was completely ignorant regarding Autism?
Anyway, I'd be really happy to know that isn't the case as one thread of my family goes back a few generations in Canada & I've always felt a slight affection for the country.

(7,430 posts)to the social conditions of 1930s Germany. While I understand that, at the beginning of Hitler's ascendancy, there WERE massive protests, they died down as Hitler kept demonizing easy marks. Here and now, we HAVE the historical knowledge of the Hitler-setting precedent, and we have, as we are now seeing, a vibrant and longer term resistance. Folks in the US are now "getting it", helped to a large extent by Trumpy's incendiary EOs. They see the dangers and they aren't fooled. And that segment is growing. So Trumpy will have an increasingly difficult time convincing the nation that he's doing the right thing, or that he even deserves a "wait and see" approach. He's quickly unifying a political resistance movement that is directing anger at both himself and the GOP. It's not been done before. Not like this.
Trumpy will either be gone (or on the way out) in six months or you WILL have something to fear. It will mean that the resistance floundered and propaganda won.

(1,154 posts)I just hit the rec button for this: "Ongoing WWIII of Duginist Russia again global liberalism" That puts the whole situation in one very easy to understand sentence. This is a war of fascism vs. liberalism. I live in California, and we are definitely in the new (fascist) administration's cross hairs. We are liberal, we are successful, our economy is vast enough to basically carry the whole country. This is a slap in the face to the fascists, and they cannot let it stand. Remember, in Gov. Brown's state of the state speech he basically told the Trump administration to piss off.

do not take anything for granted. A "jihadist" attack in Canada may fundamentaly change the political landscape of the country. Never lose sight of the end goal. Islam is used as a wedge issue to instigate fear and convince peopel that it is liberal policies to blame. The end goal is elimination of liberalism - 'traditional values'. This has allowed Brexit and Trump (both with putin's help). France, Netherlands, Germany, Italy - coming soon.

i wonder how soon trump will be picking a fight with Canada. He's already started it with Mexico - that's ONE side of our borders now fucked with. Hey, why not get 'em both stirred up? Target the north now, too, since we just fucked with the south?
And he's picking a fight with China now. And as of this writing, LESS than 24 hours ago, with Iran as well. Who's next? Anybody taking bets?

(6,137 posts)Folks, trump administration will stop at nothing in their duginist quest to destroy liberalism.
Massive education outreach is urgently needed. We are so behind at is, no one took it seriously until too late.
Please do what GliderGuider asked: learn about Alexander Dugin, learn about Bannon, there are credible sources - google it. The US has just witnessed a coup with republicans as accomplices! Why? Because many of them were weak and intoxicated themselves with this harmful ideology that 'liberalism' is the cause of all evil in the world and even Russia is much less evil. They convinced themselves that the goal justifies the means. Constitution has nothing to do with it - they don't care about it at all.
The wedge issue of abortion is one of the way for alt right to start gaining power. I am sure other wedge issues (refugees), taxes? are coming.
This ideology when mixed with christian religion and traditional conservatism (and various degrees of racism) is so powerful that it can destroy the western world as we know it - our livelihoods and economies. It will position Russia as the richest and most powerful nation in the world with its most natural resources.
Putin does beleive in climate change and one of the ways to singifcanty slow it down is to wipe out a billion of muslims from the face of the earth and destroy the progress in industrialized nations. Trump is actively provoking an attack on the US soil to create an event and gain an authoritarian power.
Why are we so naive?

Another right wing narcissistic reality star that pushes all the right (wrong) buttons to stir up the deplorables (yes we have our share here too). If Canada follows the world trend of the angry idiots voting in the loudest lying hateful xenophobic RW candidate they can, then we all will have more to worry about.
I can only shudder at the damage that an O'leary/Trump combination would do to North America. To think just a few short months ago I was anticipating a Trudeau/Clinton team working together to fight climate change and other progressive issues. sigh.

(3,280 posts)And more worried about Leitch. She's well to the right of Harper, racist, xenophobic, and much smarter than Trump or O'Leary. In fact, I can see O'Leary hitching his boat to her rising star (mixing metaphors, I know).
She's already well positioned against Trudeau after borrowing some of Trump's catchphrases and methods. I'd love to believe that we as Canadians will laugh Leitch and O'Leary into irrelevance, but after watching the US election and (as has been mentioned a few times in this thread) the number of attacks from the right wing press in Canada (the Sun, National Post) has me worried and wary.

(6,137 posts)things are escalating very quickly. Justin Treadou is kindly welcoming influx of refugees and possibly others who are denied US entry?
Unfortunately, it is a no-win situation and was likey predicated by Bannon. Massive influx of refugees will quickly activate a movement against current governemnt 'establishment'. Look at propaganda, Justin is being hammered by right wing news outlets. Any accident in Canada blamed on refugees will change your country political landscape VERY quickly.
It is getting more dangerous by the hour. McMullin created a non-partisan movement against trump. I sent him a message with my thoughts, maybe a start.
GliderGuider
(21,088 posts)I've never seen anything but an army coup move this fast.
One thing that amazes me is that they had the assets in place to exploit Trump's win like this. All they were expecting realistically was to kneecap Hillary's Presidency. But then Trump won, and everything/everyone they needed seemed to be in place. This has been planned and war-gamed in depth for several years.
AlexSFCA
(6,137 posts)that is only logical conclusion that right wing propaganda "liberalism is the cause of all evil" has been spreading also in Canada over the years and perharps even more so in recent months?
Most likely on auto-pilot - chain reaction from the US. It's probably unlikely that putin would be spending his influence specifically on Canada.

I do not believe for a moment that Trump has found Jesus and is all moral. I do not think he cares at all about this issue. He cares about the money. He just wants to stop helping other countries, no matter what. So he would be thrilled that someone else will pick up the tab. He's an asshole like that.
Now the rest of the GOP with their moral majority base won't like that other countries will fill the void.

This is not about the GOP any more, as hard as that may be to understand here on DU. This is a global struggle, and the USA is just the current battleground. The plan of those directing the campaign is that once the USA has been taken out of the world picture, they will move on to the other targets. Canada is one of those,
