(82,383 posts)that she meant something along the lines of he must be from another country if he is not white, even though he is in the military. Probably meant what state, city, that kind of thing.

(34,547 posts)at the military ball in 2009. Always a Commander in some part of the US Military has orders for pone of their young male members to dance with the First Lady. I would bet my entire house and cats that Mrs. Obama asked "so where are you from?" The delicious irony here is that some Army colonel was alert enough and had enough snark in his /her bones to send an Hispanic officer.

(5,436 posts)it's such a common question to ask someone when you meet. I probably would ask the exact same question, whether white brown black accent or not, so don't see anything racist or xenophobic in it at all.
