Chaffetz: "It's time to get rid of the BLM and dispose of federal lands"

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) released the following statement after reintroducing two bills dealing with the 67 percent of the State of Utah that is under federal ownership.

“It’s time to get rid of the BLM and US Forest Service police. If there is a problem your local sheriff is the first and best line of defense. By restoring local control in law enforcement, we enable federal agencies and county sheriffs to each focus on their respective core missions.

“The long overdue disposal of excess federal lands will free up resources for the federal government while providing much-needed opportunities for economic development in struggling rural communities.”

Bill Details:
H.R. 622
, Local Enforcement for Local Lands Act, first introduced last year, removes the law enforcement function from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and U.S. Forest Service. Instead, the bill calls for deputizing local law enforcement, combined with block grant funding, to empower existing duly elected law enforcement offices to carry out these responsibilities. The bill, jointly sponsored by Utah’s Rep. Mia Love and Rep. Chris Stewart, also establishes a formula to reimburse local law enforcement based on the percentage of public land in each state.

H.R. 621, Disposal of Excess Federal Lands Act, calls for the responsible disposal of 3.3 million acres of land identified by the Clinton Administration as being suitable for sale to non-federal entities. Encompassing just over one percent of total BLM land and less than half of one percent of all federal lands, these lands have been deemed to serve no purpose for taxpayers. In Utah, some 132,931 acres of land are eligible for disposal. - Jason Chaffetz - Republican - U.S. Congressman

Bundy-land

Ironically, conservative hunting and fishing groups are up in arms about public lands being "disposed of."

“It’s not just natural resources that are on the auction block, but jobs,” said Gale. “For a party that prides itself on being fiscally conservative ... they’re talking out of both sides of their mouth.” - John Gale Back Country Hunters Conservation Director

Most have no clue what privatization means. But hey, they will get to keep all the guns they want with nowhere free to hunt, and chew up what public infrastructure is left with their ATVs now that the trails (with former reasonable regulations they despised) are permanently off limits. Also they can forget about using personal watercraft or fishing if they do not own the waters.

Once the public lands are "sold" they are gone (many for pennies on the dollar for their worth). The citizenry will never get the land back.

maintained lands are Utah and Nevada. Now saying that, neither state has the financial were with all to even begin to support these lands. You would need to raise taxes by the Billions just to maintain these lands. Sounds good to the Rethugs, but even if they were to pull this off,no private individual or Corporation would ever be able to maintain these lands.

If you know the players who are running the show behind the scenes, you would see the possibilities. Many of these players are related by Marriages and a certain Church.

All public land now valued at $0.00, because the CBO doesn't place a value on it, up for exchange, auction and sale if his bill passes.

Besides being deplorable in so many other ways, how would this affect Native American lands that the BLM administers? Is this a plan to quiet land disputes concerning pipelines and boundary walls?

"The bill, jointly sponsored by Utah’s Rep. Mia Love and Rep. Chris Stewart, also establishes a formula to reimburse local law enforcement based on the percentage of public land in each state."

And who decides the amount of the reimbursement? Maybe the congresscritters who write the bill, in turn for some big campaign contributions paid out of their big "reimbursements," for example. As the Bard might have put it, Corruption, thy name is Republican.
