Show your papers: Maryland police question U.S. citizen's immigration status

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/maryland-police-question-us-citizen-immigration-status/

BEL AIR, Md. -- A U.S. citizen was asked her immigration status while taking a walk in her neighborhood in Maryland. The Bel Air Police Department is owning up to its misstep and says it will learn from the incident, CBS Baltimore station WJZ-TV reports.

“I didn’t expect this to happen in Bel Air. Walking while brown? He said, ‘No, no, no, nothing like that,’” Bel Air resident Aravinda Pillalamarri said.

Pillalamarri told WJZ-TV Bel Air police officers demanded her ID after a resident called her in as suspicious.

“I had just come out for a walk, so I didn’t have my ID. And he said, ‘Why don’t you have ID? Are you here illegally?’” Pillalamarri said.

"They were trying to figure out why there was some hesitation to provide identification,” Moore said. “That’s why he asked if she was illegal.”

Yes, how dare a non-white person think they can walk in their own neighborhood without showing their papers.

On edit: skin color was always probable cause. They're just expanding the tonal palette a few shades

This is liberal Maryland near Aberdeen north of Baltimore. Listening to her blatantly American accent helps highlight the absurdity.

Many of us have encountered this sort of nonsense from regular people our whole lives. It's disturbing to see it from police too.

There is no "American" look. America is diverse but some people just can't handle it and refuse to accept it.

So walking while Brown is suspicious now?

This truly exposes the racism in the police. Bad apple alert. That police department needs to do an internal review of this.

Why didn't the police ask a few more questions of the caller, such as, "What is the person doing that looks suspicious to you?" and then make the decision to tell the caller, "There's nothing illegal about walking down the street."

We will probably never know the truth about what the police asked this caller, so I'll reserve judgment, but I highly doubt there was anything "suspicious" other than brown skin.

find out about the caller. after all in some states if you call in man with a gun the police are likely to say, that's his right ma'am.

JESUSGODDAMCHRISTONACRUTCH!!!! A woman walking down the sidewalk is suspicious? Was she carrying a weapon? . . . a pressure cooker bomb? . . . dynamite? No, she was brown-skinned.
