The government, especially local ones like here in Seattle, are really working hard to prevent access to information.

Here in Seattle, Comcast has the cable monopoly over most of the city but doesn't offer service to all of it. Some of the areas are because of the city's Director's Rules that prevent upgrades since it requires a supermajority of the area to approve it. Other areas wouldn't be profitable to offer like the crappy apartment building I moved out of. A nonvote, like for a rental property where they can't contact the owner or an empty residence, counts as a no for the Director's Rules. Also, much of the phone wiring here is so old that it can't support DSL. CenturyLink would need to dig-up streets and yards and install larger pedestals which the Director's Rules here prevent. I have several friends here still on dial-up or ISDN.
