I realize that the protests this weekend sprang up around major international airports, which I get. And then the Women's March was the Women's March...and I get that. However, so far, all of these have been in major metropolitan centers, which we generally already have, vote-wise. I know that it creates attention, which is great, but let's be honest, dump isn't going to step down because of them. Some members of congress may notice but I don't know how many will remember or let it influence their decisions.
My contention is that the best we may be able to do for now is pressure our representatives and senators. Go to their offices, whether they safe or not. Here in PA we have Senators Casey and Toomey. And while Toomey is most likely a waste of time, he may be scared enough about his job that he thinks about what he does. Casey should be pretty safe. Our Congressman is Mike Fitzpatrick, who generally runs as a moderate, and should be sensitive to both sides.
Thoughts?

(58,602 posts)I assume there were a lot of people from "red" districts at those marches who felt that their concerns were not answered by the Trump election.
Much work needs to be done, but I suspect we might get some spreading support in those rural districts we've been losing for years and years.
Your idea of calling Sens and Reps is a good one. Let them know you're out there and concerned. But that's always a good idea. The important thing will be if the marches and the publicity leads to some local activism in areas that the Dem party has been weak in.
I firmly believe that we could flip the House in '18. But it'll take work.

(996 posts)Call your local and state representatives and tell them they should urge the Congress rep and Senators. I called my officials earlier to tell them they should urge our Republican congressman to come out stronger against the Muslim ban because it goes against our values as Americans.
