General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI wore my pussyhat to the grocery store today
and got three thumbs-ups, all from women. There weren't a lot of people at the store, and I felt pretty conspicuous, but after the first woman whispered "I like your hat" as we passed in the condiments aisle everything was OK. I sensed disapproval from a couple of men but that might have been my imagination. And in the parking lot a woman came up to me and said "I'm a knitter--how do you make the little ears stick up?"
I'm going to wear my pussyhat everywhere, every day. I've made three for friends. My husband's new employee has 20-month-old twin daughters, and guess what I'm going to knit for them?

(46,166 posts)And being an equal opportunity crafter I'd like to try and knit one. I've knit a few things over the years like a child's cardigan sweater. So this hat shouldn't be too difficult. Ribbing is fun to create in both crocheting & knitting.

(4,483 posts)but the prices they're asking for many of those hats is outrageous. I can make 2 1/2 hats per $5 skein of yarn.
If you sew, or even if you don't, you could make one out of fleece. Cut a rectangle of pink fleece about 20" x 10". Fold it in half lengthwise and sew up the sides. Turn it right side out and roll up the bottom so it fits your head. Poke a pencil into the top corners to make the ears stick up.
The measurements are guesses. Buy a yard of fleece--or find an old pink nightgown at Goodwill and cut it up--and experiment until you get the right fit. This isn't couture--there's a lot of wiggle room in these hats.

(90,645 posts)...to tie some string, yarn, or even a rubber band around the "ears" at the corners, because these ones look square across the top.
I need to wear a broad brim, so this particular design is out for me, but as spring and summer approach I think my hot pink sun hat will do nicely, even without "ears."

(4,483 posts)Get someone to show you how to knit and purl. Cast on 50 stitches, ribbing about four inches, stockinette (knit one row, purl one row over and over) until it's about 14 inches long, then ribbing to match the length of the first ribbing. Put right sides together and sew up the sides. When you turn it right side out, the little ears will automatically stick up. Size 8 needles, 1 skein worsted weight yarn.

(34,136 posts)I posted a link upthread. Find a color or pattern of fleece you like - fabric stores often have "no sew" fleece blanket "kits" on sale this time of year. Cut the rectangle the size in the pattern (12" x 28" . Fold the cloth in half with the right sides together so you have a 12" x 14" rectangle.
Then overstitch the sides together:
If you want to get fancy, you can use the blanket stitch:
Then turn the hat inside out, roll up the bottom and try it on!
The Marcy pattern I linked to in my other post suggests stitching across the corners at the top of the hat to make the ears. Just use a running stitch for that:

(3,370 posts)This looks like something I can do without messing up. Thank you.

(34,136 posts)That YouTube account has lots of instructions for crafts and starts at the most basic level. She was using felt and embroidery floss. Felt would not be good for a pussy hat since it doesn't stretch but the embroidery floss would be great for stitching fleece together. Look for chennille needles rather than regular sewing needles - chennille needles have larger eyes so embroidery floss would be easier to fit through.
If you can, ask if the store has a place for cloth remnants - those are left over pieces of cloth and are usually discounted. Sometimes you can find a small piece that is just right for a project. To make a pussy hat, only one third of a yard is needed so you could just buy a piece of whatever color suits you.
Go for it!

If you want the ears to stick up better, try some interfacing inside of them.
