I wore my pussyhat to the grocery store today

and got three thumbs-ups, all from women. There weren't a lot of people at the store, and I felt pretty conspicuous, but after the first woman whispered "I like your hat" as we passed in the condiments aisle everything was OK. I sensed disapproval from a couple of men but that might have been my imagination. And in the parking lot a woman came up to me and said "I'm a knitter--how do you make the little ears stick up?"

I'm going to wear my pussyhat everywhere, every day. I've made three for friends. My husband's new employee has 20-month-old twin daughters, and guess what I'm going to knit for them?

The hat on the cover of TIME was crocheted, something that pissed off a lot of knitters.

And being an equal opportunity crafter I'd like to try and knit one. I've knit a few things over the years like a child's cardigan sweater. So this hat shouldn't be too difficult. Ribbing is fun to create in both crocheting & knitting.

11. I've had good luck with items from Etsy, too,

but the prices they're asking for many of those hats is outrageous. I can make 2 1/2 hats per $5 skein of yarn.

If you sew, or even if you don't, you could make one out of fleece. Cut a rectangle of pink fleece about 20" x 10". Fold it in half lengthwise and sew up the sides. Turn it right side out and roll up the bottom so it fits your head. Poke a pencil into the top corners to make the ears stick up.

The measurements are guesses. Buy a yard of fleece--or find an old pink nightgown at Goodwill and cut it up--and experiment until you get the right fit. This isn't couture--there's a lot of wiggle room in these hats.

42. I saw some made out of fleece at the Los Angeles March. The only suggestion I have is...

...to tie some string, yarn, or even a rubber band around the "ears" at the corners, because these ones look square across the top.

I need to wear a broad brim, so this particular design is out for me, but as spring and summer approach I think my hot pink sun hat will do nicely, even without "ears."

4. I'm sure you could learn to knit this hat

Get someone to show you how to knit and purl. Cast on 50 stitches, ribbing about four inches, stockinette (knit one row, purl one row over and over) until it's about 14 inches long, then ribbing to match the length of the first ribbing. Put right sides together and sew up the sides. When you turn it right side out, the little ears will automatically stick up. Size 8 needles, 1 skein worsted weight yarn.

Check out this site: http://www.wikihow.com/Knit

If you can't do it, send me a message and I'll make one for you.

We first met soon after I returned from 'Nam. He was planning to go without me and he actually marched while I waited at the end point for the march to arrive. He was raised by a strong woman. One of his sisters is strong and all but one our nieces are. If he wasn't willing to support a strong woman, I wouldn't have asked him to marry me.

55. Can you thread a needle? Then you can make a fleece one!

I posted a link upthread. Find a color or pattern of fleece you like - fabric stores often have "no sew" fleece blanket "kits" on sale this time of year. Cut the rectangle the size in the pattern (12" x 28". Fold the cloth in half with the right sides together so you have a 12" x 14" rectangle.

Then overstitch the sides together:

If you want to get fancy, you can use the blanket stitch:

Then turn the hat inside out, roll up the bottom and try it on!

The Marcy pattern I linked to in my other post suggests stitching across the corners at the top of the hat to make the ears. Just use a running stitch for that:

59. It's not hard at all!

That YouTube account has lots of instructions for crafts and starts at the most basic level. She was using felt and embroidery floss. Felt would not be good for a pussy hat since it doesn't stretch but the embroidery floss would be great for stitching fleece together. Look for chennille needles rather than regular sewing needles - chennille needles have larger eyes so embroidery floss would be easier to fit through.

If you can, ask if the store has a place for cloth remnants - those are left over pieces of cloth and are usually discounted. Sometimes you can find a small piece that is just right for a project. To make a pussy hat, only one third of a yard is needed so you could just buy a piece of whatever color suits you.

Go for it!

19. I wear mine everywhere

I'm on my 5th one now (I gave a black one to my male friend for his birthday) and I'm going to put them on Etsy. I'm going to donate some of the proceeds to either Planned Parenthood or a local Democratic Party (depending on where my buyer is from).

21. Good for you

I think we all need to be constant reminders that we are here. I'm turning out at least one/day and giving them away. I'd like to see pink (or non-pink!) pussyhats everywhere.

25. Thanks

I've given two away so far with one more to be given away. Then I'm at my freebie limit. I'm on my 2nd today.

If any DUer wants one, I'll give a discounted price. If you want pink, specify the shade (baby pink, neon pink, coral, fuscia). If you don't want pink, specify a color.

31. I'm such a dunce...

In reading through this thread, I finally realized that the peaks on the side of these hats are kitty ears!

Because up to this point, I've been thinking the hats didn't exactly look anything like the part of the female anatomy I'm familiar with.

OK, I'll stop right here and go soak my head.

Males...

60. Wait... those are kitty ears? Seriously?

I thought they were supposed to be an approximation of ovaries, with the hat being a uterus.

*smacks forehead*

As I tell my wife, I may be a little slow but I get there eventually.

danddknitting on Etsy. He is liberal and he and his husband have an Etsy shop with lots of knitting on it. He makes the pussy hats in any color and they are cute. I can't do a link from there because I can't find a way to capture the link from the app, but you can do a search.

76. at Joann's

I saw a lady with a pink lightweight fleece pussy hat with the ears decorated with a kind of day-glow feathery yarn --- COOL! I complimented her and noticed her cart was full of many, many yards of various shades of pink fleece -- she's making more.

If you want the ears to stick up better, try some interfacing inside of them.

78. suggestion

One important suggestion to ALL protesters is to always use American symbols before they are reclaimed by trump supporters. I learned this from www.learnfromeurope.org

This is very important for America and the world to see that WE are the true american patriots.

Add American flag to your pussyhats! Defend American values and not treasonous anti-american president.

82. Since the march on the 21st, I've worn a pussy hat to the store three times so far.

I'm an old geezer who often seems to attract right wingers who, when they first see me, make a snap judgment that I am one of them.

I shall maintain the image, mainly because I am who I am and do what I do.

I almost always wear a hat. I have a lot that are completely apolitical. Nowadays i wear these two the most.

94. Print this out

size 8 needles, one skein of pink yarn

Cast on 50 stitches. Work in k2 p2 ribbing for 4 1/4 inches, then stockinette stitch until piece measures 13 inches. Go back to ribbing for 4 1/4 inches and bind off.

Right sides together, sew up side seams. Turn; poke the corners to make ears stand out.
